EXHAUST TOO LOUD

EXHAUST TOO LOUD
On my 69 Valiant with a 360/408, with 3" TTI exhaust, I originally had 3" Cherry Bomb Turbo mufflers, from Summit. In an effort to lessen the noise, while cruising, I switched to 40 Series Flow Masters. -- For those of you who know, obviously I went in the wrong direction. The Flow Masters are louder than the Turbos. -- Now the question -- Any suggestions on what muffler to use ? I still want to stay with 3" mufflers to match up with the current pipes. I realize that I probably will sacrifice some performance as I go to quieter mufflers, but that's not a major concern of mine. -- This is currently a Street Cruiser, not a Drag Car. -- Worst case or possibly best choice, I can go back to the Turbos. -- Thanks

Add a Resonator to the system... That should cut the DB by about 10% to 20% or there about.... Or Look into the Spin Tech muffler.... You might need something with like 3 baffles.... Just my 2 cents....

Had the same issue with Flowmaster 40's. I have TTI's as well and the noise was overwhelming. Bought a set of Borla's from Summit and problem solved. They fit right in place of the Flowmaster's with out changing anything on the exhaust system. Borla's can also be reversed ( installed in either direction ) so there's no definitive "in" or "out". The sound is really pleasing.

I doubt on any a body has room for 2 mufflers or a muffler and resonator. any 3 inch system with be loud. I have the sumit 3 inch system on my dart with a 318 . its louder than my 440 challngr with a 2.5 inch system

yep i think bob is right the newer mufflers are very good. i am just going to stay stock from now on. i built a muffler from scratch one time. for a slant 6. large otter tube with a small er inner tube. with the inner tube held to the outter tube at the end sliding on to it. and take out bolts and remover the inner tube for just a large out let.

Getting Older
-- Yep -- 3" systems are loud. I've had both 2-1/2" and 3"systems with Flowmasters before -- BUT -- I was 20 to 30 years younger, and thought that it was "cool".

FLOW MASTERS ARE GONE
I took the Flow Masters off and put the "Cherry Bomb Turbos" back on. They have a nice sound, but are much quieter, especially at cruising speeds of 50 - 60 MPH.

The 40 series FM are the loudest they make, IIRC. You can either try the Magna Flows (use the biggest ones that have your I/O configuration) or get a pair of stock Walker Hemi mufflers. That's what I'm using, and while not dead silent, quieter and with a slightly more "Stock" sound. When you're racing, they're coming off anyway, right?
