Fuel issues
Fuel issues
Afternoon gents.
My 68 GTX 440 is having issues starting after some new parts. She had no issues starting in the past, besides the stock starter was a little slow. But I added a new fuel tank and sending unit, but kept the original metal 3/8" fuel lines up to the fuel pump. I changed the fuel hoses over to a -6 AN lines after flaring the end of the metal fuel lines and connected them to the new mechanical fuel pump (Holley 12-440-11). Now she wont start! Cant seem to get fuel up to the carb. I have run air through the line and its coming out to the tank, so I don't seem to have any blockages in the lines. If I disconnect the AN fittings at the flared end and drop that into a gas can she will fire up so I don't think its the pump that is a problem. Besides flaring the metal line again do you guys have any ideas on what the problem might be?
Oh and I had to replace the stock starter to an after market since the amount of cranking I did finally burned up the ol girl.

Ok, might sound weird but I got the old girl to fire up the other day after a lengthy delay on being able to work on her. I went back and checked all the line attachments again (making sure everything was hooked up properly). I again unhooked the front line next to the pump, dropped that into a separate gas tank and fired it up. Next disconnected the rear sending units line, dropped that into the separate gas tank and fired it up. I noticed my small fuel line from the sending unit to the fuel line was a little long, so i trimmed about an inch off of that and hooked it back up. from all the priming i had fuel coming from the carb right away and she turned over. had her running for a little bit now ive got to tune the carb since my garage was filled with exhaust fumes and white smoke after that. Thanks for the reply and suggestions guys.
this may sound strange but its true. i had a 300 L that at high RPM it lost power. it had a steel fuel line going throu the right frame rail, stock. that rusted just a little. so at low RPM the amount of fuel was fine, but at high RPM it would suck air and not fuel. ANY hydraulic system will suck air on the suction side LONG before fluid on a small leak. the same hole size on the pressure side will NOT leak.
