Head Advice

The heads that came off of my 360 are casting number 4027596. I've read these were used on police car applications and RVs.

I'm stroking the engine to a 408, using a Scat rotating assembly 12.1, Comp Cam with valve lift of 0.488 int./0.491 exh., Hooker 1.75" headers, 600cfm edelbrock with a rpm air-gap edelbrock intake.

Can these heads handle this application? With port and polishing? or should I buy new (rather not...)?

Thanks in advance.

Welcome.

With big compression and big cubes your expected power level must be high and those heads won't get you there.

Thanks for the welcome.

What if I drop the compression to a 9.7:1? These heads are a 63cc, I would hate to waste them.

the head s are stock nothing special 160 188 402 7 56 59 but they work for me ported and port match to the intake.

on the cam the word on the street is voo doo cams are ground for long rod mopars where the comp cams are ground for short rod chevy's go with a similar voo doo cam from Lunati
i'm using the edle avs 650 spread bore carb on my 318 with a little less cam that your planing too use and she uses it
minimum 650, I would use a 750 Advertised Duration (Int/Exh): 268/276
Duration @ .050 (Int/Exh): 226/234
Gross Valve Lift (Int/Exh): .494/.513
LSA/ICL: 110/106
Valve Lash (Int/Exh): Hyd/Hyd
RPM Range: 1800-6200
just an example
check out the web site.

Best flowing 360 heads were magnums. And in stock form they would be a restriction in your build too.

Your build is well thought out. If you haven't gathered your parts let me make a suggestion.

As stated above, those heads wont feed the beast. They will work but since you are spending the time to stroke it, I assume you want at least 1 HP per CI or better. Your lift numbers tell me you are gonna use XE274? Correct?

The intake is excellent, as is the header diameter. The carb is small and will work but will hurt you big time power wise.

Use the 9.7 kit. I think its around $950 unbalanced. The hyper piston is very good for under 500 HP. Have the shop set you up for zero deck.

Remanufactured Magnums are short money. $250 with 8mm valves and will flow 210-215 cfm.

Engine Quest recast the magnums and makes new heads. These are the best bang for the buck and with a 2.02 valve these will flow 250 cfm as cast. I run a pair now and have worked on a bunch. 350 each.

RHS will flow same as EQ but hang on better in the upper lift range. But at .499 lift it isnt worth the extra cost.

The Scat 9.7 kit is what I was thinking, Also, I was planning on going with a 750cfm carb, but the edelbrock site said it would lag in my application and that the 600cfm was the better route, but I have no problem going back to the 750cfm if it will work better.

Also, right on the money with the XE274. I want to be able to drive this car, not just drag it.

Thanks for the advice on the magnums, I hate to spend $1800 on aluminum heads if there's something out there that will work fine for less. I want to do the car right but I don't want to just throw money around foolishly for big numbers that I don't need.

If you don't need it together ASAP save some money and buy the EQ heads over the magnums. The extra 30 plus cfms will net very large increase in the entire curve on that motor. Plus they are very heavy casting and can take a beating. And at half the price of Eddys there a steal.

That cam in a stroker will work nicely.
