Help with basic stuff for a newbie

Hello gents, just a few basic questions I need help with please. I acquired an old 1951 Dodge M37, the PO was kind enough to replace the ole flat 6 with a nice 440 with a TF727 trans. I have this old truck pretty much down to the frame and now its that time to yank the engine and trans.. Here in lye's my issues. I have never pulled an motor out of anything..... I have looking into this as much as I feel I and i think I may have it, but rather than hurt myself or the engine ( more than it already is ) for safety sake I thought I'd get clarification here.. I borrowed a 2 ton engine lift/hoist, I am led to understand this engine/trans combo should weight somewhere in the 900-1000 lb range. I'm am not real clear when to bolt these chains up to though.. I have seen a few pics when they have bolted two chains on opposite corners of the motor as in were pointed to in the pics.. ( of course i would remove the dizzy first ). Would this be correct? Just seemed like a lot to ask these little bolts to hold half a ton. Clarification would be hella nice .. Secondly, would I be a total bastard if I were to lay the two down on a pallet temporarily until I can get an engine mount? I know these are elementary questions for the experienced but that I am not. Of all the books I have bought, none mention anything in this subject.

One here? ( remove dizzy first )

I would always use an engine leveler, not just for the four points but tipping the engine makes life so much easier and much safer. This is just a representation of what I'm talking about: http://www.toolking.com/1/performanc...r_10535606.php Heavier ones are available.

those 2 bolt should hold the combo without breakinga sweat. i have seen a few engines pulled using the carb mounting area which uses bolts alot smaller than those 2. but if in doubt you could also use one of the exhaust studs to pull the engine. which is how i have done it several times.

I agree with Mike, no issues. ZI bought some #8 bolts and put them in those two exact spots, no problem. As for putting on pallet - Again, you should be good. Good luck and keep us posted, love to watch and learn myself.

I use the intake bolts just because they are some times easier to get at. Put some 2x4s under the thing to level it for storage, on the pallet. When you get ready to start working on it, make sure you get a heavy engine stand with four wheels on the ground. You are going in the right direction. Keep an eye on safty and you should enjoy the hobby very much.
