My 383 squeals even without any belts on..
Somebody told me it's the timing chain....the motor squeals as though it has a loose belt....gets worse when warmed up...I pulled all the belts off and briefly ran the engine. Still squealing....I don't want to run it but I really miss driving it. Any ideas?

Excessive end play in the crank? Crank pulley bent and rubbing? Ring gear on flex plate shearing off, starter still engaged?
I know u posed long ago but grab a used stethoscope from ebay and pull the head off. Install some rubber hosing, 1/4 inch or so. Then get under there and source it.

Back on it after a while
Hello
Finally gonna do something about it. Think I'm gonna look at the timing chain...bought the set and going for it tomorrow. Any helpful advice ? I think I'm gonna need a puller. A phone call would awesome

I have to tell you that squealing and timing chain are not two terms that come to mind in the same thought. That's not to say that the timing chain/ sprockets are not worn out.
I would try a length of scrap hose, IE fuel, etc, as a listening aid. Probe around the front of the engine, stick it down into the breather holes, probe around the rear of the engine /bell housing/ torque converter

Yes I thought the same thing.
Used hose to listen. Seems to be coming from crank pulley area... I have not been able to figure it out. Really not in the budget to tear down the motor but timing chain and gaskets are under 100.00 and its something I can look at/replace without ending up with an unfinished project. I'm kinda taking a risk that I don't get it but I'm going nuts looking at the car in the driveway...aaaaargh.

I have had to front crank seals make a squealing noise on more than one occasion the seal drys out and the grease in them solidifies and forms a glue like substance. Causing the squeal. Yes you will need a harmonic balancer puller, they should have it at any parts store. There not alot of money

We will know soon
the timing chain was original and pretty loose. If I were just reassembling it would be done now and I would know but in stopping to clean and paint a bit. Next couple hours I get will go to completing it and I hope that fixed it. The seal you mention is that the one on the timing cover? I replaced it
