Someone who can describe how to easily set the ignition without an ignition timing light? This is a Dodge Pioneer with a 318 engine from 1961..

Align the timing marks on the dampner. Connect a test light across the ign points Turn the ign on. Then turn the distributor in the direction of rotation until the test light just lights

Use a vacuum guage connected at the manifold and adjust timing for the best vacuum pressure.

What is dampner?? Is that the ignition timing mark on the crankshaft?

found this on a Swedish site: Did you switch, put a test lamp between the + and pin on the distributor and adjust until the light goes out at 10 º.
I do not know which pins on the distributor, which I will put the light on, there's the middle one and then 8 of them to.

Then I'm not sure which one is cylinder 1 to 8, is the cylinder closest the cooler, where you fill the oil that is number one?

Maybe I can take a pic of the motor and someone can tell my which one is the first and so on..

Do what Eric said. Start the car, once warmed up, loosen the distributor bolt and SLOWLY move the distributor back and forth. The engine will start to run rough as you reach the extremes clockwise and counter-clockwise. You want the best (fastest) rpm (or best vacuum). Lock the distributor bolt.

Drive the car (truck) and do some hard accelerations (up hill if possible). If you don't hear any pinging, leave it alone. If you do hear pinging, back off on the timing a little.

thanks.. I'll try this when I got my new universal joints so I can test drive the car then. The firing order, I knew, I have original manual from 1961, but it never explained which was the first cylinder and so on ..
