New fuel pump not working on a Mopar 440

I have a 1970 GTX with a Mopar 440, I just put a new fuel pump on it, because I thought the pump died, but it's not building fuel pressure, and I noticed that there was no resistance from the cam rod when installing the pump, so I took it back off and watched the cam rod as the car was being cranked, and the rod does move about 1/2 an inch, and I finally found that the cam rod isn't even hitting the fuel pump lever/arm on the new pump, so I tried the old pump and the lever barely hits the cam rod, not enough to pump any pump though.
Any thoughts on what I should do?
Thanks much
Isaiah

The pump pushrod is a wear item. It takes very little wear for a failure. Check for wear and buy a new pushrod.

Ok, Does that require me to tear down the engine? or is there an easier way?
Thanks

All you guys need to get yourself a service manual. You can download many of them free over at MyMopar. The rod comes right out of a B / RB engine, there's an pipe plug, usually allen head, "down there."

Inspect the end of the rod, and if it looks bad, inspect the cam. Inspecting the cam WILL require a tear down.

Frankly, I'd install a rear mount electric pump, which helps control fuel boiling / vapor lock with today's alcoholized fuel
