Will these work on a '68?
Will these work on a '68?

I estimate about $900 at the machine shop for what I want, and these are less than $500 a piece and come set up other than rockers.
Will they work on my '68 318?

NO. These are drilled for the magnum intake bolts. NOT the LA.
Good news: They make a version for the LA. that is drilled correctly.. EQ318B
This may be long but I want others to get the skinny on this so they are informed on these heads. Bare with me. Sorry in advance..
EQ or Engine Quest along with RHS are made in a New Zealand / Austrian foundry. They are OUTSTANDING castings. Super strong decks, they handle heat well and even abuse. Castings are very clean and seldom reguire cleaning or deburring. Chambers were all 64cc. The engine builders I have studied under LOVE these. I concur..
The LA version and Magnum version are set up for Magnum Pedestal Rockers. Same flow.
I have purchased from CCH AKA: Odessa Cylinder Head. The head you are looking at has a aftermarket single lock stainless steel valve on it. They flow GREAT. One set flowed almost 250cfms on the intake.. CCh uses a Pioneer Spring. AKA the Hughes 1110. Its a 5 dollar spring that works well. Its an aftermarket 8mm valve.
I have a modified set of these on my mule but they were redone for different springs / valves and ported slightly and the guides cut and pads dropped etc..
These will work: http://www.ebay.com/itm/NEW-EQ-LA-IR...7a91a9&vxp=mtr
But there is more to making them work.
1. They take Magnum valve train. Most bone yards have the stuff.
2. Magnums oil thru the tappets. So you need AMC lifter ( or aftermarket) and oil thru PR ( 7.6 PR length memory serves correctly)
3. You can use LA head gasket but not LA head bolts. Magnum Head Bolts are needed.
I have used dozens of heads over the years. From all big 3 makers. LS stuff, GT40 etc... These are the best bang for the buck period!
Now the bad. Some retailers are selling these EQs with a 2.02 valve in a seat cut for the 1.92. They will function but due to the fit they don't carry heat away from the stem into the casting for the water to move the heat well. So you are making ridiculous friction and scuffing the valves. I wont say who does this, that aint my style cause it is a margin call. Just not the way I do business.
My advice would be to by them bare ( $275ish I think) and add the smaller cheaper Magnum valves, Magnum Locks, Pioneer Spring and retainer. It fits the seat perfectly. Better velocity with the smaller valve for that 318 too..

But they do make intake manifolds that have both holes for LA and Magnum heads just to throw another wrench in there. I would go back to the other head question thread and read up on those 302 heads.
Aww, you guys are the best. Thanks for all that GREAT information! I'll definitely check out those 302 castings. I'm not looking for a 12-second car, here, just something with more thump.

I like the 302 heads for a mild build. No fuss, good performance.. Way cheaper for this build.
Here is a dual bolt pattern intake.

Here's part of the description for those 302s:
THESE HEADS FIT YEARS 83-89 AND HAVE A 68-72 CC COMBUSTION CHAMBER. THE INTAKE VALVES ARE 1.78 AND THE EXHAUST VALVES ARE 1.51. THESE HEADS ARE FULLY MACHINED TO AERA SPECS AND COME WITH A 3 ANGLE VALVE JOB.
I've got a '68, so why would they work?
Also, with those small valves, what makes them performance? I'd LOVE to spend the money for those heads instead of a grand on others if my engine will actually work better with them.

skwerly,
With the 302 casting it will handle a 2.02valve. All the spacing on the SB heads are the same. If you port them heavy and it the right places you can get them up to 200 cfm at .500 lift. But thats a lot of work... As is they flow 140 cfm max. Back in the day thats what was available to work with. Stock magnum castings flow better.
Bang for the buck is the EQ: let me explain..
bare castings $550
SI valves domestic replacements 8mm $100
Get the magnum rockers from the bone yard. $50 most! check http://www.car-parts.com
AMC lifters are 50 new
So $750
new springs 90
new retainers 50
measure pushrods 80 ish
cam 110
You are flowing 230+ and that will feed a 390 stroker when you grenade what you have.
Let me ask another question? If you havent bought your pistons and intake yet why not grab a bone yard 318 magnum roller with the mag head. Headers are the same. Internal balance. Will take your TC cover, takes same water pump, mount the flex plate and go.
$500 for low mileage block, get your cam, swap springs and 350HP is easy and reliable with a roller valve train..
Just a thought

Ah, yes, I see. I've purchased the pistons/manifold already, though; they are ready to go on. Pistons are just .030 jobs from RPM-Machine.
Also, I noticed that these later heads had much bigger combustion chambers. My '68 came stock with 9.2:1 compression. If I throw the 302s on, for instance, I'm probably looking at 8.4:1 which, of course, sucks.
I could deck and all that, but if I'm putting mega bucks into machine work, I can just use the stock heads and slam valves and a port job on em.

Still less than your quote: Have them credit you for the springs and get the ones for your cam. Mill to suit your needs. Check piston to valve clearance when cam goes in for sure!! They flow 190ish.. Thats great for a 318..
