4x4 problems and need some info
I have an 86 dodge w150 4x4 and the four wheel drive is all messed up and id rather have a 2 wheel drive so my question is can i take the front differential out and put a front end from a 2 wheel drive truck under mime? Im not sure if the frames are the same and is a direct bolt in swap plz help
If you have manual locking hubs then there is really no need to swap the axle because when not locked the wheels spin free from the internals so there is not the extra resistance of turning the gears. The question then becomes the transmission, is there a benefit for him to swap out the transmission to the 2wd version? Do the trans mounts match up? What is messed up on the 4 wheel drive?
This is an older thread but I will weigh in. The frame rails are the same but the cross members are different. The parts are riveted in place and have to be cut out, new holes drilled and bolted back together. I did the opposite building a 4x4 from a 2wd. It is a fun project but you will want a complete chassis to locate everything. I bought a wrecked w250 with a bent frame and transferred everything to my d150 20 years ago and am still using it.
