68 New Yorker - POSI?

Im having a little fun fixing up a 68 NY 2 door... Motor all rebuilt with new manifold, carb, headers and mild cam... I want to beat feet between stop signs, but it has a 2.76 rear end. I have a 3.55 Sure Grip to put in, but axles arent cooperating... They seem to be about 3/8" too long... Anyone done this (i doubt it) or have any suggestions?

Here's a litte more info... The original axle shafts have an adjuster to set the end play. They are also too long and will not fully seat inside of the 3.55 center section. The 3.55 center section doesnt have a pin that moves to allow end play adjustment like the original 2.76 one had... I dont know much about these things and I am trying to help my mechanic figure out the best way to proceed to get the 3.55 SureGrip to work in this c-body... Any suggestions are surely welcome...

The end play adjustment is adjusted AT THE axle with the threaded adjuster. DOes the axle without the adjustment go in ? Did you replace the axle seals ? maybe they are not in far enough

Hi TV... I'll check with my mechanic regarding the seals. I can tell you that even the drivers side shaft won't slide all the way in... It feels like its bottoming out on the cross pin, which doesn't seem to be moving or floating at all. (I would expect it to). I'm wondering if the center section isn't properly set up... Shouldn't that pin float? I guess an even more basic question is: is there any reason a SureGrip shouldn't be able to go right in on a C-body? The one coming out and going in are both 8-3/4 742's and the splines, etc match up...

If it is a clutch style it will have a cross shaft block with two thrust buttons "floating" through the center against the axle ends. I can only think that these are bound and not fully inserted in the block, holding the axles out. Hopefully this picture will show them. http://www.selectric.org/manuals/dodge/sg4.jpg

And loose. http://www.brewersperformance.com/pr...rod=SGP&cat=71

I just changed out a 2.76 open rear end, 741 case. Went to a 3.91 Sure Grip also a 741 case in my 69 Road Runner. Only thing different was the yoke had to be swapped from the original case, as it was the larger one. It works fine, no problems. Maybe they used a different axle length for the other 3rd member? But I doubt it. I would look at the carrier itself. Pull the carrier back out, install the axles in it and measure the total length of both axles to the wheel mount flange. Do this same procedure with the original carrier, and that should give you a clue as to whats goin on. Good luck!

just went over there and looked at it with my mechanic... there are two sets of splines on teh sure grip and they werent aligned which didnt allow teh shaafts to fully seat... Also, the thrust buttons were completely missing (i had no idea) so i just ordered a set from YearOne.... Hopefully this will do the trick. Thanks y'all for your help... Cant wait to feel the difference between the 2.76 and 3.55.... : )
