8.75" housing seams. Is this normal?
 

I was a member here years ago but it has been so long that the system did not recognize me anymore so now I am a newbie gain.
Not sure if this is normal but to me it doesn't seem like it. I will try to post the pictures of the housing seams that are welded on the inside and outside but there is a split in each seam. Both the inside and outside ones are all the same.
Housing came out of the car running just fine, no leaks.
This came out of my 70 RR
Can you guys let me know what's up with this?

Looks to me like its just a sloppy old weld... I'd grind it, Clean it, and reweld it, if it was going in my car.... Just my 2 cents... :)

It is crazy that all 4 welds are cracked. The pumpkin face and back side are totally fine which really confuses me.
No matter what or how simple I think a project is going to go, there are always surprises like these.
The reason I have it all apart is to swap the 742 3.23 case with a 489 3.91 and install a Right Stuff disc brake kit. The kit came with 2 emergency brake cables of the same short size and one side needs be be longer, go figure, another surprise!

Sounds like a common change over.....
Before you weld that housing, Make sure it is straight from end to end.... :)
Should be ok as long as your not putting gobs and gobs of H.P. to it...

I've seen that type of weld before, on frames sub frames and suspension parts etc. from the 50s and 60s. The worst part is to put down a nice weld your going to have to remove all the weld you now have. Otherwise you get more shit weld.

I brought it to "The Rear End Shop" and Barry told me that is normal and it should be fine but may want to weld it up but make sure it's straight.
I guess I will put a digital level/protractor on each end to see if it's straight then grind down the welds, V-notch them a bit then fill with stitch welds so it does not warp.
The more you do, the more goes wrong and the further you get into things, the more problems you find. This is why you have to completely go through everything you do and make sure it's all good to move forward.
