Help choosinggear ratio

Hey guys, need some input. Starting to rebuild my 9.25 rear end, looking for input...Rear wheels are 20", trans is 727 from a 69 polara ( not sure if that dictates gear ratio)

Thanks

What is it going into? Is the car just a cruiser or strip? How tall are the tires? Motor details? Convertor size? These all play into what gear ratio to use. Normally a 3.55 is a good compromise.

Okay remember that torque, weight and such are major players when someone is giving you advice on a torque convertor. I usually talk to a torque convertor builder and let him decide what I need. At that time he will also ask you what gear you are running. I would not go with 4000+ stall and 3:55 rear gears. My car will probably never see the strip and is lighter than yours. My 9 1/2" convertor stalls at 3200 and my rear is a 3:55. It runs in the 3000+ RPM range at 65 mph.

Either Paul with Turbo Action or Rick with A&A Transmissions

With such a small tire,go with a 3.21 gear. And like bremereric said, convertor is too loose, get a tighter convertor otherwise all the low end torque a 528 stroker makes is wasted. Why such a small tire? Looking for that low rider look?

Too loose? So your saying my 800.00 converter is the wrong one? I was told that the stall had to be around 4000???

That depends on the cam and desired operating rpm range. What is the duration, overlap, and lift on the cam? Stroker big blocks don't need to rev very high to make power.

4000 stall is going more towards race less for street. If you use that converter I would go with a 3.91 gear and a taller tire. It's too much converter

You have a 528, auto, 4000 stall, 24" rubber and your driving it now at 65mph turning about 3000rpm. If I have that right do you know or can you calculate the gear that is in it now. It sounds like a 3.55, I would stay with the 4000, change to a 3.9-4.1 with a solid pinion spacer but increase tire size.
Two things I see you have so much power you'll tear those tires off or wrap up the rear axle breaking U-joints or more. Sounds like your serious about your launch and I would recommend a rigid mechanical traction device and cup holders.
