Speedometer problem

Hi all,
What causes a speedometer needle to bounce all over? That's what happens to mine. It will bounce up and down over and under my actual speed. Cable was new as was the gear for the tranny. Tried this on two different speedometers and get similar results.

Is there a sharp bend where the cable is routed? Disconnect the cable at the tranny and turn it by hand. It should turn pretty easy without any tight spots.

It's the old speedometer head in the cluster. Mine did it until I sent my cluster out for refurbish. Has something to due with the old white lithium grease.

Well...that sucks. Spent good money having the one cluster sent out to the states for refurbishing with specific mention of the speedometer needing to be checked. If that is the problem...then that was wasted money. However, the second cluster came out of a 76 Duster that had been on the road here locally and as far as I know it worked. But...it does not seem to now. Grrr....

Why the new gear? did you use a different one? The housing for the speedometer gear has to be indexed to the number on the gear.

New gear and cable was put in when the car was converted to a 4 speed. It's the speedometer that is the problem...I think.

Going up to the garage to work on it now. Going to check the whole distance between speedo and trans.

I believe so...bit of a sharp twist that I managed to straighten out. That seems to have done the trick. Can only get up a bit of speed in the driveway. Will havce to wait for a proper road test.

Or you could smoke the tires down in the driveway and watch the speedometer.
