Lowering car.

OK I have a 1966 Dart 270 wagon.

What is the easiest way to lower it a few inches?

Thanks!

Torsion bar front end?

Uhm... I actually have no idea. I have never been any good with suspension :(

How do I tell?

Does it have springs? Google '66 Dart front suspension and look at some pics. If it's torsion, it's easy as pie.

All A bodies have torsion bars. You can lower it some Maybe two inches. The suspension will have a tendency to bottom out. PUT the car up on jacks to adjust them. Any more than that and you need to have custom spindles made

First soak the adjusters in penetrating oil , Make Sure the weight is off when you loosen the adjuster bolts so they do not strip & the cars falls on you , count the number of turns you undo each side so you get it even , your toe in will change as it is lowered so you Have to reset that as a minimum or have the wheels re-aligned .
The rear can be lowered with lowering blocks between the spring & diff , check the pinion angle , you can correct that also with angled lowering blocks if it is off .

Yessir! You can effectively lower your car in two hours this way. I had the back of my Fury down three inches via blocks, but I knew nothing of how to drop my front. Then someone told me about the torsion screws and about an hour later, the car was in the weeds.

:hello:

I appreciate the info. After I finish the heads this week, I will crawl underneath and look around!

that is interesting to know how easy it is to lower the front. Would you need to re align the car after that though?

does any company sell lowering blocks specific for a body cars? or is it a make your own type deal?

autozone carries them. yes you will have to get the front realigned for both toe and camber.

i would also think about putting a small section of tubing at the back of the k frame near the oil pan just to make sure that the pan is protected from bottoming out on the road.

i'm thinking of doing that on my car the pan sits about 1/4" below the k frame. and the bottom of the pan has a few dings in it already.

you lowered yours alredy or is that with stock hight? I'm in Maine land of potholes and frost heaves so lowered cars are not very common.

mikerp76 Feb 20, 2013 05:48 PM

it's semi stock height. it was lower than it is now when i first got it. and it bottomed out everytime i went over a speed bump
