Unhappy Alternator Gauge Up In Smoke

'69 Fury III 318 2bbl. Today the alternator gauge went up in smoke, literally. The red + black wire were touching & had melted together over the years & now the guage is toast. I cut the wires to the guage & ran them to an aftermarket autometer amp guage & now there is no ignition spark. The motor turns over but won't fire. This Plymouth ignition system is driving me mad. Am I correct in understanding that the original D/C guage is integral to the primary ignition circuit? There is a huge 10-guage red wire & the same guage black wire to the D/C guage. Anyone with insight to fix this gremlin gets a pint of single malt.

It could be the type of gauge and the way they are wired ? Best is to tie the two wires together and it should work

X2. Bolt the two wires together and tape them up with electrical tape.

Are you saying the engine turns over using the key? If so, the ammeter connections are OK. If you unhook the ammeter, or it develops an open, or the wire ends break inside the original molded ends (it happens!!) you will have NO power in the car, no headlights, accessories, no start or ignition

No1 biggest problems on these cars are:

Bulkhead connector poor connections

ignition switch/ headlight switch poor connections.

Bad switches.

You have a wiring diagram or better yet, a shop manual?

Wink

The ammeter connections were fried together, & the Fury wouldn't turn over with the key. Using the starter button i had previously installed on the starter relay, it would turn over but there was no ignition spark. I bypassed the D/C guage & it finally cranked & started, but now the battery is not charging & the dash lights are inoperable...enough of this BS, I have contracted the services of Allston Auto Electric to replace the entire engine harness & dash harness. This rust-free '69 Fury III deserves it. C-Bodies Forever!

You can order a new motor forward and dash harness from Year One and do it yourself. I did.
