Autometer Dash

Has anyone taken out their old guts to their dash and fitted all auto meter stuff? I kind of want to get rid of the old circuit board and put in all new gauges like tach, fuel, speedo, fuel, volt, water temp, oil pressure in the spots already on the dash and just retro fit the dash so at first glance it looks original until you sit down in the drivers seat. Just curious if anyone has done it or knows of a stock looking replacement I can do it to. Im not a fan of using the racing style gauge cluster plastic because to me it looks cheap and it meant for racing so it isn't suppose to look nice. Any feed back would be great.

I replaced the tach and speedo in my 69 Charger with Autometer stuff and yeah, it looks stock unless you're looking. This was a mechanical gauge swap out though, and didn't get into the circuit board. I DID however disassemble the small gauges paint the needles orange to match the Autometer stuff.

Well I was looking at gutting the gauges and replacing them all with the Mopar autometer ones, they seem to be about the same size, I would just have to make a metal mount behind the black plastic front and this would pretty much solve any future issues I could have with the dash. I mean all new is always better then old rebuilt, it seems like it would be cheaper also then restoring the dash. I am not making my car a show car but only a nice weekend driver.

Yeah, sounds like something I've always wanted to do. Are you going electric or mechanical? I've always wanted to go mechanical (besides the ammeter and fuel gauge, of course)

It would be electrical. I already plan on buying the kiesler 5 SPD tranny when I come back from being deployed and that can be made with either mechanical or electric speedo, the tach would be electric along with fuel and water and volt. The only mechanical I would keep would be oil pressure. It seems pretty solid and is a nice touch you won't realize is there until you take a second look.

Regardless of which way you go For mechanical gauges DO NOT use the plastic line use a braided AN type line for that oil pressure gauge

Is there a reason to use the braided one?

Plastic is plastic. It will leak or brake. Use copper and save a possible disaster.

Depending on ? It may not pass the NHRA tech for street drags (Qualcomm ??) that's only one reason why not to use plastic !!! You don't want hot oil in the passenger compartment
