My new to me 68 Cuda is targeted as my daily driver.

As such, I'm wondering if the stock lighter can handle car adapter/charger that's probably rated for 2.1A @ 10W. I'm also looking to a Bluetooth FM transmitter because I'm really trying to avoid any non-stock changes to my interior.

FMU, the lighter is fused to 15A so I'm well below that, but I'm curious if anyone's tried this.

 

No idea, but I just wanted to say I think it's bad-*** that you're doing the daily driver thing with your 'Cuda. Wish I could do that with my Charger, but I need a box truck full of tools and stock for my job.

 

Thanks. My goal was to find a driver and I did. My mech is cleaning up some of the electrical and tuning the carb. I hope to pick it up tomorrow but still waiting for the title as well from the auction. The waiting is awful, in a good way I suppose.

I know the MPG will take getting used to but I've got my 2007 FJ Cruiser as a backup in case the Cuda's out of commission.

TBH, the likelihood of the iPhone being useable in car is low. It's so loud that I can barely hear anything but the rumble.

Yeah, that was my concern. Back in the day, you popped it in, waited, and then lit up. There wasn't any need to run that for more than a few minutes. My commute is 45 min worst case, so was wondering if it was doable for that long, even at a low 2A.

last weekend I went for a ride in my 68 cuda and plugged in my gps. It was plugged in for about 2-3 hours and had no side effects. I think you are good.

 

old school -

I've run modern devices (GPS, cell phone chargers) from the cig lighter in my 74 Charger. Not too often, and not for very long, but no issues.

Don't think the design has changed much over the years.

Additionally, there were not that well protected (fused) back then, but most people got by because "we" didnt' have a lot of crap hooked to them.

Nowadays, though, with the deterioration of age, and adding more "stuff" like fans, pumps, big stereos, and big alternators, the old system can really screw ya.

In the eighties, I've seen A LOT of pickup ammeters that looked just exactly like the one in that article. Sometimes, all that were added were driving lights. Sometimes, it was the cheep *** cluster plastic just softened

I was referring to the electrical.
And btw, I reconnected my ammeter and have yet to have an issue with that either.
All the Internet did was waste my time.

It's up to the owner to decide/determine if his wiring has deteriorated to a point of failure or will handle the expected load. We're not talking about "fans, pumps, big stereos, and big alternators" we're talking about using the cigarette lighter for a low voltage/amperage device.

It's possible (and likely) to be technically correct and still dead wrong in the real world.

If you have an absolutely factory stock old Mopar, AND you have no added equipment, AND you use a reasonable alternator like 45A, AND the wiring is in really good shape, you will likely have no problems

I've seen PLENTY of malfeasance in my life on automotive electrical. I know what works and what does not.
