71 Scamp Help

Hey all,

My project seems to be never ending trouble. I have a few more steps to finish up on some mechanics and the last major one I am doing now is replacing the water pump. It is a 318 with the auto trans.

My problem I have run into is unhooking the tranny cooling lines from the bottom of the radiator. The bolt of the steel end that is supposed to spin free on the line is seized to the line. I have sprayed with pb blaster and let sit for 2 days with no luck.

Any tips on getting this thing moving without twisting and breaking the line?

Also what would you think about cutting the line around 6inches off of the radiator and possibly fitting a hose?(about this far back on the line it is rust free)

Third option is to replace the lines. If I have to do this anybody know where to get them for a decent price. Im on a tight budget.

Thanks,
Rob

Give a thought to buying a double flaring kit and maybe a cheap bender. Buy a roll of steel tube and fittings and make them up. I understand about the budget issue but with the tool now you'll be ready for brake lines or anything in the future, could end up money in your pocket.

Thanks for the reply. I will definitely look into that and see what that will be cost wise.
I'm learning everything as I go so it never crossed my mine that it could be easy to make my own lines.

Looks like I will be making them after comparing costs. Does anyone know the best place to buy the stainless tubing. Also what size tubing and fittings I will need?

Thanks again.

If you can lay it up for a day, I prefer to remove these small parts and have them in hand when I go to the auto supply. Great time to drop pan and replace filter, if you can, weld in a bung for future draining. There are mechanical drill and bolt in too.

They make rubber hose specifically for trans fluid lines. I would not recommend using this to replace the lines rather to repair the lines. Use a tubing cutter, cut the lines in an easy to get to spot, and re-attach with the rubber hose and quality clamps.

X2. A short piece of tubing rated for that is fine. I have some Sebrings, and they have rubber hoses 14" long from the cooler to the trans. It just has to be good line.
