71 valiant Transmission

I was wondering if anyone could shed some light on why my auto 3 speed tranny wont shift into 3rd gear with out shifting into nuetral then back to drive and it will catch....could it just be a vaccum issue?

it dont use vacuum lines like the chev, id say the linkage needs adjusted
