904 trouble
my duster is having a hard time getting to and staying in 3rd gear. after 2nd it feels like it goes into neutral. not really slippin, it just doesnt like to go into third. ive been manual shifting from 1st to 2nd, then bringing it up to speed enough to throw it in drive, then letting off the throttle almost all the way off to get it in 3rd. then while in third if i push the throttle too much it will feel as if it goes into neutral again. ive played around with the linkage and still have not been able to get it right (doesnt seem like a linkage issue). ive also replaced the filter. it only has 40k miles on it. also, since im tired of this pos tranny, is the a-833 my only choice for a 4-speed besides the lower geared truck 4-speed? i have to figure it out soon because its my daily driver.

Hi Slow70Duster,
Have you checked the vacuum modulator? Make sure the vacuum line is connected. If it is, try replacing it, they are pretty inexpensive to come by. You should be able to pick one up at any parts store.
If that don`t fix it, you may want to have the tranny looked at by a reputable tranny shop.
It would be easier to replace the tranny with the same type, as you won`t run into other factors that will increase the cost of the swap. 727s are nice, bulletproof trannies, but they are longer in length than a 904, so driveshaft shortening or replacement add to the cost. An 833 is pretty much the only game in town if you want to convert to a manual, but again, you run the cost and time factor up. Pedals, z-bar, clutch linkage, bellhousing, clutch, pressure plate, and all the other assorted sundries run up cost, not to mention time trying to locate the parts and then install them.
My advice, being the cheap bas***d that I am, would be to repair the tranny that is already in it.
