Thinking of getting a 74 duster
Hey guys,
looked around the forum a few times and now that i found a duster i though i might as well post here.
So anyways,
I found this 74 duster online, It has a newly rebuilt 318 with dual carbs on a tunnel ram and a 727 trans. He said the interior needs some work. My dad doesn't like the fact that it's a 318 and not a 340 and we're not sure about the interior, So i'm wondering if i got it would it be worth building this 318 or should i look for a 340(maybe something bigger) to swap out or would it even be worth getting this car? I know 340's are kinda hard to find aren't they? So how much do they go for and is their any good website you guys recommend where i might be able to get interior /parts that would be needed don't really see alot in our mustang catalogs? Also if i go check this car out is there anything to look for that might lead to problems or hidden places where rust might be?
Anyways here's some pic of it.
Thanks!

A lot of people give the 318 motors cr@p (I use to be one til I learned). They are a really strong motor and I would rather have a 318 than a 360 due to the reliablitly of them. I know a lot of people that have pull LA 360s out of their 1/2 and 3/4 ton trucks for a 318.
With that said, you can build a 318 to have some decent power (around 250 - 300 HP and some good torque). I would find out what has been done to the motor and tranny for upgrades. Dual quads on a 318 is a bit much (unless it is 2 300 cfm carbs. dual 500s is a lot unless it is built up). Go and take a look at it. See what the interior needs. a lot of things can be found on craigslist and ebay for that car.
I would look at the floor boards, truck floor, quarter panels, torsion bar frame and inner fenders in the front.

All depends on the price Skate, how much ? But if this is your first Mopar get something that won't discourage you when you start to fix it up. The car doesn't look too bad from here, but it depends on price and how much work is attached to that price. We'll help ya for sure...gotta get ya off the Ferd drugs...lol. Oh ya welcome to the show.

He wants $3,000 or best offer asap. Which doesn't sound bad. I don't mind working on little things since school will be getting out and I'll have spare time before work. I'm just not sure about that 318... I want something that i can take to the track and be able to beat my dad with. lol

I like the way your thinking...lol. You can look at it this way too, It runs but needs interior work etc etc. Take care of that stuff first and when you get to a point that you feel under powered motor wise, than the fun begins...lol

A lot of the parts that are on the 318 will work on a 340 and 360. You need to first go take a look at the car and see if it is worth the $3000 to you. it's your money, do with it what you want. Thats all i can say for now.

So if i built up the 318 and find a 340 down the road i wouldn't really have any problems?
As far as the picture goes the interior doesn't look like it needs a complete restro... Only thing i can see is it needs the molding for the door and probably just cleaned up. I would try to talk him down to 2,500 or so, but idk.

If i had that kind of money I would go for. Im trying to get get a 318 for my Duster. You can do a fair amount to them. Even seen a few turbo'd but thats pretty extreme. But i agree with these guys, check it out, if you thinks its worth it, get it.

Hahaha, Sounds good. We'll have to check it out. I always wanted a big blower sticking out of the hood and that air intake would make me happy for the time being.
I'm wondering is if the interior isn't bad would you buy it or should i keep looking? It seems like every day i look around the old hot rods keep going up higher and higher. Are they really cars people want? I don't see them to often, Oh and i'm sure chicks would dig me with or with out the car

Hmm, I like that duster but i just found this 70 cuda on craigslist but almost sounds to be a scam. Maybe i'm just expecting this car to be worth more? Though maybe it was a typo and he ment to say 48,000 but that would be to much...
take a look,

can't see the link, sorry bro. What these guys have said is good advice. its your money, you have to decide what to do with it. If I was you, I would just be so grateful for being allowed to even consider getting a mopar. I am 17 and I have had almost a dozen cars now. All GMs and one Ford. Just be happy you have a cool dad who is letting you get a mopar. go take a look at the duster and if it is in good shape and it turns you on, buy it. if it ain't what you really want, don't worry, you got plenty of time to find a car that really defines you. just my 2 cents.

Hope I didnt kill your dreams, but I scooped up that 74 duster you have pics of in New Jersey. If you were looking for a easy resto project, you should thank me!! lol! This thing is hurting. Motors sweet, body is f!@#$# ed!!!! Its a 318 w/ 340 heads (2) edelbrock 4bbls. wieland tunnel ram. I got it home, changed oil, pulled off the carbs and sprayed them full of cleaner. new battery and threw in some gas, and it fired right up. I made it to the end of my drive way, and it started pouring rain so I backed it right back into the garage. body wise, it needs quarters "He gave me both brand new"- trunk floor and drop offs, d side and p side floorpans- this car is a rolling tetnus shot!!!lol -- I restored a 68 dart that was worse "not much" but close to this duster. Iam looking at alot of time to fix this up. I paid 2200 for it "pretty fair" - got alot of xtras. "center console, etc. Iam NEW to this forum and dont really know you, but keep looking! There was a 71 cuda on craigs list 2 weeks ago that was 340, no rust for $7000 "I think it was in North East Philly." keep looking the deals are out there!!!!!!
