1976 Dodge 360 Distributor wire placement

I cannot find a legit wire diagram for the distributor. Some diagrams place #1 spark plug at 11 o'clock. Some are at 12 o'clock. My 360 is at 4 o'clock. The engine sputters and back fires because the timing is wrong so I'm trying to correct this. Any help is greatly appreciated. This 360 is installed in an RV. By the way I tried using my timing light but cannot hit the mark.

Welcome. You need to find TDC of number one cylinder at the compression stroke, take off the distributor cap and point the rotor at number one, then do firing order clockwise.

thanks.... will try that
can I assume that the slot that turns the shaft is NOT adjustable like the GM small block?

If you mean the slot in the gear that the distributor goes in, it can be lifted and moved over a tooth. This also drives the oil pump with a hex on the bottom.
Manual will show this slot pointed at the front intake manifold bolt, driver’s side, number one cylinder compression stroke at TDC. This orientation is to accommodate the hold down bracket and room for the vacuum advance canister to move while timing.
If the distributor is already in do as I said in previous post and align rotor and number one wire and go from there.

Take a large slot screwdriver and twist, it will walk it's way up. You may need a magnet or hook or coat hanger to pull it up the rest of the way.

Dan, thanks for all your help.
I can finally see the timing mark on the wheel. Seems like the rotor was 180* off but ran with back fires.....
Second I found a broken spark plug and replaced them all.
Now I'm tracking down coil voltage issues which in a new thread. Thanks again.
