very frustrated with swinger

Hey how is everyone. I got a 71 dart swinger that I've been looking everywherefor for a long time and practically sold my soul for and wouldn't have it any other way lol. So to get to the point the dart doesn't have the power or the drivability I was expecting. To start with I put a brand new holley 80457s and a eddie performer intake on her. The problem I'm having is a surge or hesitation at part throttle and especially while going up hill. At first thought vac leak but have 20hg at full manifold vac at base of carb. Engine has 70 thousand original miles and has lots of snot yet and still very strong. Was thinking larger power valve and was wondering what some of you mopar vets could come up with. Just seems like it should have more to her. Please throw me some ideas cuz I'm all out. Thanx ahead of time guys. I would really love to be able to enjoy her true potential forgot to add. Its a 318 la electronic ignition. Initaial advance at 10 degrees. Thanx again

Hi,
and welcome to the forum
as far as the surge that is a lean surge
the 80457S comes with 64 pri. jets I would go up to size 66
( part # 122-66 for a pack of 2)
I don't know if this will give all of the performance you are looking for but it will at least help and the carb will be doing its part
Thanks

Before I'd start tearing apart carbs, (this sounds like a fairly stock engine?) I'd be checking fuel flow/ pressure. You might have a clogged tank screen, goop in the fuel system, or a pump on it's last legs.

"Rig" a tee at the carb, install a pressure gauge, even if temporary, in such a way that you can view it on a test drive, and see if the pressure drops under surge conditions.

Weld in an O2 sensor and a guage. If you are not data logging you are throwing darts. Best 200 bucks you''ll spend. Sounds like you know your way around a motor as you have done the basics. Then you can tune this yourself.

or

Don't know where you are or if they are around you but a dyno pull with AF ratio is usually 75 bucks for 3 pulls. Tell him you want part throttle and WOT data. The system logs from start up, but they usually only give you WOT data. Take it all. This can be EXTEMELY helpful because it will log rpm so you can tune the carb specifically for the event.

As mentioned above you can tee in the FP gauge and place it on the windshield as you run the rollers.

thanx gentlemen

Thanx gentlemen for your thoughts. I will try the jets and get back to you to let you know the results. Also will post some pics asap. One other question. Shifts rather soon is this a kickdown adjustment issue or am I looking else where. I believe is a 904. And do I make the kickdown rod longer or shorter for longer shifts. Setup kickdown like was said in previous threads but still shifts real early. Thanx. You guys are awesome

A fuel flow problem will only show up at wide open throttle
It will not surge at part throttle
Thanks

Welcome!

I'm not sure about the kickdown but someone on here I'm sure does.

Ran -

Just for the record. a strong vacuum at idle doesn't preclude a vacuum leak. You can either install a vacuum gauge to read while driving or spray water or ether (starter fluid) around the gaskets and hoses and listen for rpm changes.

As for a power valve, if the 20 inches of vac is correct, then you'd want a 10.5 PV. If you decide to change the PV, do as ricky said and swap out the jets as well.

It's been a long time. I used to push the trans kick down lever ALL the way forward or was that back ???? and then adjust the throttle rod to just slip onto the carb stud
Turn the mixture screws out an additional turn
64 jet is too lean for a 318 go to a 66 mentioned , maybe even a 68.
the jets are only a few $$$ so I would order both sizes and an extra float bowl gasket
