Pro Stock Qualifying Notes, Session #1
By Larry Sullivan

CONCORD, N.C. - Notes from round 1 qualifying in Pro Stock at the NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series, Second annual VisitMyrtleBeach.com NHRA Four-Wide Nationals listing lane, driver name, elapsed time, top speed, and position in order following run:

Lane 3: Steve Spiess Runs 15.483/70.42, Now #1
Lane 4: Mark Martino Runs 16.721/81.84, Now #2

2:13 p.m. Weather conditions: air temperature 76 degrees, relative humidity 35 percent, barometer 29.44 inches, adjusted altitude 2,129 feet, track temperature 114 degrees.

We start the four-wide with a two-wide pair of cars (to make the rest of the foursomes come out even). It's the first time out this year for both drivers. One other big difference this weekend - all four rounds of qualifying will count, no "provisional" qualifying this weekend.
Both cars launched into severe tire shake and both drivers coasted through.

Lane 1: Robert Patrick Runs 6.682/206.83, Now #1
Lane 2: Dave Connolly Runs 6.797/208.30, Now #3
Lane 3: Frank Gugliotta Runs 6.778/204.60, Now #2
Lane 4: Bob Benza No Time, Now #6

In this foursome, only Gugliotta has raced this year.

Benza made the burnout and shut off, leaving a trail of "stuff" on the first 300 feet of lane 4. The other three drivers made full passes. One of the cars (couldn't tell which one) has a small underhood fire in the shutdown area, but the Safety Safari got that out quickly.
Robert Patrick's incremental times: 60ft-1.008 sec., 330ft-2.804, 660ft-4.301/165.09 mph, 1,000ft-5.593.
Dave Connolly's incremental times: 60ft-1.060 sec., 330ft-2.914, 660ft-4.422/164.37 mph, 1,000ft-5.713.
Frank Gugliotta's incremental times: 60ft-1.019 sec., 330ft-2.847, 660ft-4.366/162.35 mph, 1,000ft-5.675.

Lane 1: Buddy Perkinson Runs 6.698/207.02, Now #3
Lane 2: Larry Morgan No Time, Now #10
Lane 3: Warren Johnson Runs 6.633/209.14, Now #1
Lane 4: Kurt Johnson Runs 8.530/116.82, Now #6

WJ is in a Cobalt, Kurt's old car, this weekend after a testing accident. This is the first time Warren has been in a Chevy since 1979 and the accident was the first time that he's ever put a car "on its lid." For Pro Stock, that's a pretty good record. His crew has carefully labeled the top of the Cobalt "This Side Up," just in case he forgets.

2:34 p.m. Okay, let's try this again. Morgan got timed out and didn't get a time. KJ first driver to react to the unexpected green with only three "stage" lights on, WJ was the last. All made clean runs.
Buddy Perkinson's incremental times: 60ft-1.006 sec., 330ft-2.817, 660ft-4.317/164.51 mph, 1,000ft-5.609.
Warren Johnson's incremental times: 60ft-1.008 sec., 330ft-2.791, 660ft-4.276/165.90 mph, 1,000ft-5.556.
Kurt Johnson's incremental times: 60ft-1.031 sec., 330ft-2.989, 660ft-4.785/124.27 mph, 1,000ft-6.686.

Lane 1: V. Gaines Runs 6.621/209.62, Now #1
Lane 2: Ronnie Humphrey Runs 8.460/115.42, Now #9
Lane 3: Allen Johnson Runs 7.868/149.93, Now #8
Lane 4: Shane Gray Runs 6.669/208.20, Now #3

Four in, four greens for the first time this weekend, and two good runs, Humphrey and AJ off the throttle by half track. Gaines goes to #1 with low ET and top speed so far.

V. Gaines' incremental times: 60ft-1.007 sec., 330ft-2.793, 660ft-4.272/166.97 mph, 1,000ft-5.547.
Shane Gray's incremental times: 60ft-1.002 sec., 330ft-2.806, 660ft-4.302/165.23 mph, 1,000ft-5.587.

Lane 1: Ron Krisher Runs 6.744/209.46, Now #8
Lane 2: Erica Enders Runs 8.029/123.51, Now #12
Lane 3: Rodger Brogdon Runs 6.577/209.72, Now #1
Lane 4: Vincent Nobile Runs 6.631/209.82, Now #3

Enders' car made a wide swing on the launch and had another wiggle at half track, then she slowed. The other three had more-or-less full passes, but Krisher lost some time to early tire shake.

Ron Krisher's incremental times: 60ft-1.105 sec., 330ft-2.898, 660ft-4.382/166.05 mph, 1,000ft-5.667.
Erica Enders' incremental times: 60ft-0.987 sec., 330ft-2.778, 660ft-4.478/131.20 mph, 1,000ft-6.283.
Rodger Brogdon's incremental times: 60ft-0.983 sec., 330ft-2.755, 660ft-4.231/166.83 mph, 1,000ft-5.504.
Vincent Nobile's incremental times: 60ft-0.992 sec., 330ft-2.782, 660ft-4.273/165.33 mph, 1,000ft-5.554.

Lane 1: Mike Edwards Runs 6.579/210.21, Now #2
Lane 2: Greg Anderson Runs 6.600/210.24, Now #4
Lane 3: Greg Stanfield Runs 6.582/210.37, Now #3
Lane 4: Jason Line Runs 6.622/210.08, Now #6

Four good runs, but Brogdon stays atop the list.

Mike Edwards' incremental times: 60ft-0.978 sec., 330ft-2.752, 660ft-4.231/167.01 mph, 1,000ft-5.507.
Greg Anderson's incremental times: 60ft-0.992 sec., 330ft-2.773, 660ft-4.253/167.07 mph, 1,000ft-5.527.
Greg Stanfield's incremental times: 60ft-0.988 sec., 330ft-2.762, 660ft-4.238/167.16 mph, 1,000ft-5.510.
Jason Line's incremental times: 60ft-0.996 sec., 330ft-2.788, 660ft-4.273/166.19 mph, 1,000ft-5.548.

Steve Spiess' incremental times: 60ft-1.004 sec., 330ft-2.803, 660ft-4.298/165.17 mph, 1,000ft-5.584.
Kurt Johnson's incremental times: 60ft-0.990 sec., 330ft-2.777, 660ft-4.269/164.99 mph, 1,000ft-5.552.
Buddy Perkinson's incremental times: 60ft-1.008 sec., 330ft-2.809, 660ft-4.304/164.63 mph, 1,000ft-5.593.
Now Shane Gray is on the bump spot at 6.640.

Lane 1: Erica Enders Runs 6.606/210.18, Now #11; Best prior run: 6.611/209.04, Was #12

Lane 2: Warren Johnson Runs 6.630/209.98, Now #14; Best prior run: 6.631/209.20, Was #14

Lane 3: Bob Benza Runs 6.684/207.66, Now #17; Best prior run: 6.652/207.78, Was #17

Lane 4: Robert Patrick Runs 6.692/207.37, Now #21; Best prior run: 6.682/206.83, Was #21

Benza and Patrick are also in the "go or go home" category.

It's "go home" for both. Nice pass by Enders to move up one spot, but she won't have lane choice in round one. WJ improved a thousandth, stayed 14th. Erica Enders' incremental times: 60ft-0.990 sec., 330ft-2.774, 660ft-4.257/166.42 mph, 1,000ft-5.533.
Warren Johnson's incremental times: 60ft-1.002 sec., 330ft-2.791, 660ft-4.275/166.29 mph, 1,000ft-5.555.
Bob Benza's incremental times: 60ft-1.015 sec., 330ft-2.816, 660ft-4.313/164.75 mph, 1,000ft-5.600.
Robert Patrick's incremental times: 60ft-1.018 sec., 330ft-2.819, 660ft-4.317/164.57 mph, 1,000ft-5.606.

Lane 1: Dave Connolly Runs 6.586/210.14, Now #7; Best prior run: 6.598/209.49, Was #9

Lane 2: Allen Johnson Runs 6.585/211.26, Now #6; Best prior run: 6.586/210.21, Was #6

Lane 3: Shane Gray Runs 15.153/57.28, Now #16; Best prior run: 6.640/206.95, Was #16

Lane 4: V. Gaines Runs 6.633/209.59, Now #13; Best prior run: 6.613/209.10, Was #13

The field is set, but positions can still change.

Gray spun the tires in first gear. Nice passes by Connolly and AJ, Connolly moving into the top half of the field (AJ was already there). Gaines did not improve and stays in the "lucky" 13th spot.
Lane 1: Ronnie Humphrey Runs 6.592/210.57, Now #10; Best prior run: 6.591/210.11, Was #9

Lane 2: Greg Stanfield Runs 13.530/65.23, Now #6; Best prior run: 6.582/210.37, Was #5

Lane 3: Vincent Nobile Runs 6.578/211.16, Now #4; Best prior run: 6.590/210.28, Was #8

Lane 4: Ron Krisher Runs 6.586/210.67, Now #8; Best prior run: 6.608/210.41, Was #12

Stanfield's car shook and turned left. Nobile mad a great run to move all the way up to fourth and Krisher was not far back to move into the eighth spot. Those moves pushed the other two down a rung on the ladder.
Ronnie Humphrey's incremental times: 60ft-1.002 sec., 330ft-2.777, 660ft-4.251/167.05 mph, 1,000ft-5.522.
Greg Stanfield's incremental times: 60ft-1.004 sec., 330ft-3.574, 660ft-6.796/069.10 mph, 1,000ft-10.221.
Vincent Nobile's incremental times: 60ft-0.982 sec., 330ft-2.763, 660ft-4.241/166.97 mph, 1,000ft-5.511.
Ron Krisher's incremental times: 60ft-0.990 sec., 330ft-2.767, 660ft-4.245/166.87 mph, 1,000ft-5.517.

Lane 1: Greg Anderson Runs 6.612/209.92, Now #2; Best prior run: 6.566/210.37, Was #1

Lane 2: Rodger Brogdon Runs 6.614/209.98, Now #4; Best prior run: 6.577/209.72, Was #3

Lane 3: Jason Line Runs 6.562/210.97, Now #1; Best prior run: 6.576/210.77, Was #2

Lane 4: Mike Edwards Runs 6.573/210.80, Now #3; Best prior run: 6.579/210.21, Was #5

Brogdon's car moved around a lot on the launch. Line made a great run to take the #1 spot away from teammate Anderson. Edwards stepped up to move back past Nobile, all the way to third.

This is Line's first #1 qualifier since the Fall Charlotte race last year, his 18th overall. Greg Anderson's incremental times: 60ft-0.993 sec., 330ft-2.781, 660ft-4.261/166.70 mph, 1,000ft-5.538.
Rodger Brogdon's incremental times: 60ft-0.988 sec., 330ft-2.783, 660ft-4.266/166.68 mph, 1,000ft-5.541.
Jason Line's incremental times: 60ft-0.981 sec., 330ft-2.752, 660ft-4.225/167.16 mph, 1,000ft-5.494.
Mike Edwards' incremental times: 60ft-0.978 sec., 330ft-2.754, 660ft-4.231/166.76 mph, 1,000ft-5.503.
