400 -> 440 73' D100 swap?
If this not the right section just let me know so I van post all my 73' truck stuff there.
So I'm posing this because my enogine runs but is tired, I'm worried that a leak down test will reveal some problems, hope not but likley.
I found a rebuilt 440 ftr what seems like a good price and in the event my engine needs a rebuild I may look at the swap ad a better option, maybe.
Is this just a straight up swap coming from the 400? I believe I already have a HD radiator but I'm not positive. I have the Adventure Sport model with a tow package and trans cooler, dual batteries (not stock that I know of), and a brake controller.
Thanks

Thanks! Knowing that they are the same thing almost that's what I figured, I was thinking I may have a problem with the exhuast. You never know though that's why I ask.
That motor sold already anyway, went for $500. There is another one for $800 but the wastelling me its sock execpt it has a MP .590 320 cam, he used it to "get groceries and drive to the track" spunds like BS to me. 320 in a gocery getter on stock short block and heads?!
Unless I find another good deal like that I most likley rebuild the 400. I'd like to have the extra cubes of a 440 though and since I don't plan to stroke anything or build big HP the superior casting (IMO) of the 400 doesn't matter that's why I was leaning towards the 440. Just wanna pull stumps, LOL. Seriously, I do plan to buy a boat soon.

Yeah a rebuild is whats it's looking like at this point, I'll keep my eyes open for a good deal though. The 400 should be plenty.
I talked to the guys at 440source about a cam upgrade (during rebuild) and they recommended a 224/230 at .477/.480 for my use, I agree that's the best grind for my needs but they always tell me numbers that I feel are way optimistic, 500lb of torque even on my stock 346's. All I have is a performer/750 combo right now, I imagine he assumed I had headers. Still wish they wouldn't do that, I know they have a good rep but that sort of thing would suck if I was counting on those numbers.
I just need lots of torque down low so that will be a good build, possibly 4.10 gears too. The boat launches in my area can slick as ice teflon coated ice, I've seen trucks sliiiide down launches with smallish 17-18ft boats.

WEll it's be strongly considered.
I did a leak down test, had to cut it short due to some water in the line, engine was safe. On the side I was worried about (no. 6) there was a HUGE drop, like 35psi from the 100 I started with. It's the rings. First clue was the NASTY fouled plug with wet oil. I test 1 and 3 and they were both at an 8psi drop, so those are good.
I'll do some more checks tomorrow but it would just be confirming what I thought alkready... 1 dead cylinder and 2 more that are pretty tired.

oh, BTW same guy as a 67' 440 out of a Imperial says it has a recent rebuild (he thinks??) for $500.... If the rebuild thing is true that beats doing it myself, especially if I can talk him down to $400
Found some "mystery" headers too for $75, haven't heard back on any of the specs yet.

I dont know where you are finding these, but Craigslist rules around here! Folks have these 70's motorhomes that arent worth ****, but they have 440's.hd trans's, and they are giving them away for 5-700 bucks

Where are you located? I think I may have seen that same CL ad for that Winne 440
Anyway...if you are thinking of rebuilding, you could always get a stroker kit from 440source.com. That is where i am headed with my Duster

How about putting a 440 crank in the 400 block?? Doesn't take much machine work and that give you 451". I have two such engines and the power my 3,000 lb Barracuda to low 10.00's at 133mph. Plenty of torque and lots of power... Just another way of getting inches from what you have....

LOL yeah it's gotta be the same one, I'm in Bremerton. 440source is way outta my league right now, wish they offered a lower end version good up to say 600lb tq and not just the 1,000+ setup.
I had thought there was quite a bit of maching needed. I may look into if I end up needed machine work anyway. One problem is my truck is my parts hauler so I can't reuse any parts from the shortblock only the heads and accessories can be reused since I can bolt that stuff on in less then a day.
If somebody would buy my LS6 already maytbe I would stroke it, LOL
one guy on CL offered me a fully rebuilt and machined 400 for $1400 still needs to be assembled, think he said he would do that.
He was also telling me a 440 won't fit so well in a truck with PB, A/C and etc... I don't see cause there is TONS of room in that engine bay BUT if that sounds familliar to anybody let me know.

LOL, I found this too. (straight C/P from CL)
68 440 that is 30 over with 8.5 to 1 pistons shot peened H/O rods a 464/464 ISKI cam 906 heads with mopar performance rocker arms and 600 lift crane valve springs a edlebrock tourque 2 intake single plain and a b&m flex plate. The motor is fully balanced and blueprinted. only have about 20,000 on the motor.

Well, if it is running well enough, why not pick up a core 400? You could then use time as your weapon and gather the parts you need. That is my plan ( except life seems to have other ideas...interested in a 68 Dart? ) Right now, I am waiting on October to get my next installment on my projects. The other half seems to be having issues tho, and I may need to sell the Dart. Whatever. I am hoping to find a D200 that I can replace my D100 with. Then I would have a towing rig...most likely stock with a big block. I also have a few big blocks laying around...so

I may just do that, it just all depends on how things line up. See I reeeeeealy want a boat but I also wanna/need build up my motor a bit, can't have both. So I may just buy a small 19ft fiberglass boat off my buddy for a grand and then collect parts for my BB build. That other boat is so small that it wouldn't even phase my truck, I've hauled a couple 1 ton loads w/o all. So that's where I'm at.
I just bought how to build max performance BBC and can't wait to sell off that LS6, theny Mopar conversion will complete, LOL

Okay so the $500 440 out of the 67' imperial is not rebuilt making the $100 78' RV 440 look alot better. so I think I may just pick it up tomorrow, even if I decide to stroke a 400 instead I think I'll grab this motor. Not planning to stroke or anything....but damn those are some sexy cranks on 440source.

Besides, the 440 isn't THAT much taller than the 400. I guess that with the 440 vs. the 400, might be the same principle as the A Body. Since you can use B Body headers with the 400 in an A, but not the 440...

Well after takinmg a look at the clearance I have now it's made me wonder. I have a about 1/2" of clearance now and with the .75" more height of the RB deck I think there may be an issue.
Thbanks for that booster setup, I'll look into that as an option when going 440.
I still don't know for sure what I'll do. There is a $300 440 w/ under 40k about 2hr away but I have to pull it out of a motor home then load it up, by myself. I like the idea of just dropping that one in and being done with it so I'm going to try and make that happen.
But if not I'm back to rebuilding the $100 440 (which may be about the same cost) so that leads me back to stroking (on the cheap) or just buying some stealth heads.
I'll figure out some more details tomorrow when I can call around to some shops and talk to the guys at 440source to lay out some solid plans.

Muhahahjaha I bought the 440 for $100, got a bunch of gaskets and other crap for another $20. I scored!
I'm still not sure what I'll do, build up the 400, the 440, stroker? I'll just play it by ear I guess. I can get the 440 crank offest ground for $75 and then use BBC rods for a 3.9 stroke.

A buddy of mine has a 76 he pulled the 383 that was in it out and put a 440 out of an RV into it and he says that the valve cover hits the booster and causes the cover to leak. He has tried different covers and all but it still leaks. But maybe he has another issue still haven't been able to get my hands on his truck.
I was close once, could of had it for myself for $6500 after he put 25K into it. Damn Damn dirty wife, Uh I mean ape. (Maybe the same thing) HAHAHA

You said before this was a driver and you need it. What about finding a good buildable 400 and go from there? Or, can you offset the brake booster to fit the 440?

SOMEONE HELP!!!!!!!!
440 blocks are larger than 400s and 383s dimensionally. I have a 440 in a 73 D100 and valve cover contacts the brake booster. Use the cheapo thin cork gaskets and solid motor mount and you shouldn't have a problem. I am getting ready to swap in a 400 block now displacing 500 cu. in. from Muscle Motors. Problem, SOMEONE HELP!!!!!!!!
I can't find headers other than HookerHeaders but they are small diameter primaries with only 2.5" collectors. Anyone found off the shelf headers to fit this application????
Dyno sheet for the motor shows 553 hp @ 5100 rpms and 614 ft lb tq @ 4300 rpms. Little headers aren't going to cut it.
