ford 390 help
My brother is finishing up his 390 for his 65 Galaxie. I know its not a Mopar but I was hoping someone can help. We have the 390 all together but he went and ordered a SFI Fluid Crankshaft Balancer as the org. one fell apart. The new harmonic balancer is wider then the stock one, how do I get the pulley to line up with the water pump or is it just not going to work?

What I will add:
Is it seems to me that the simple fix is to find a water pump pully with a different offset. I'm sure that you're not the first person with this issue.
Is your brother building this 390 to TRY to keep up with a Mopar 383?

Hope not 390 vs 383. The 390 I feel was best used in trucks. I would have run a different big block but he wanted "all org. " thing had a 351 when he got it told him to just stoke that small block.For the pully they do make a universal shim kit from summit to space they pully . Sleeping on it, I think he should just go to a shop with the waterpump gasket trace it out on 1/4 thick sheet, cut it and drill 3 holes. Putting the new spacers between the block and waterpump to move it out.This way the pump gets moved out not the pulley and wont put extra stress on the water pump bearings.But perhaps Iam wrong as everyone just tells me to move the pulley. Maybe Iam just way over thinking the whole thing. I just want everything to be perfect

Nothing wrong with a 390. Most have 2.75-3.00 Diff gears behind them. Mopars most often run 3.23s altho some 2.76s are around in non-performance vehicles.The big Fords were also a few hundred pounds heavier than their mopar and chevy counterparts so there is some disadvantage there. Ford had lots of differant heads which can have a big effect on performance.The 390GT heads are fairly common and are decent altho 428CJ or 427 heads are much better. Stuff a 428 crank in it and you have a 410. A more agressive cam and exhaust are a must to wake up a FE.

I see, he has factory heads on the car now so what your saying is keep on the look out for 428 or 427 heads and he can pick up a little HP. Thats good to know about the crank like a little factory stroker FE engine. I sent him the link to the forum and will also let him know about the cam he just got the headers

Thanks Gabe and his car stay in San Mateo with nick(brother) and his cutlass that we did. I live with my girl redwood city and we have a her 65 mustang and my mopar.Point being I know you live around, we may move the cars to a whorehouse Eastbay as we know the owners. If we do we may need a couple more people if you know anyone interested

My thought would be that you are not getting the dampner on all the way.. I HAD A after market SFI dampner on a 360. Was a B to install. You need to heat it up in the oven before trying to install it.. USE the proper installer tool
