318 4bbl mystery, im stumped

Ill get strait to the point
Last week i was driving around, slammed on the gas around a corner, the thrrottle didnt close but the cable returned?
Replaced the throttle cable
On the test drive i pushed the gas about 1/4 and the throttle opened up more by itself causing unintended acceleration
Thought it might be my kickdown so i unhooked it
Same thing

Its a stock 318 with an edelbrock intake carb
The linkage seems fine
Idling/ revving normal

Is there something in the carb i could have busted?

Its the 600
No cruise controll
Return spring works fine
The trottle moves smoothly, no binding
It only happens under load

Should have two springs. One for the throttle and one for the kickdown. Make sure there is enough spring tension. Is there any play in the throttle shaft? What kind of manifold is it ? any adapter? Is the choke hooked up ?
You might check the motor mounts A broken mount could cause it.

It has the mechanical kickdown no spring (i think)
No choke
There is some play in the throttle shaft it doesnt get stuck
The performer mani? It was a gift
Worked fine till now
I cant see anything wrong with the mounts
Could a broken accelerator pump cause this?
Visually it all looks ship shape, im missing something

I know you said that the throttle is moving f4reely, but when you "stomp" on it, if the cable wasn't set so the stop was the pedal travel and not the throttle travel, you could have damaged the throttle body. That will usually show up with less than smooth movement in part of the throttle throw, but stranger things have happened.

So i could have hit the gas too hard and tweaked my linkage/ throttle rod?

Yup, very possible when the travel limiting factor becomes thee throttle body. Usually you can see that by manually operating the throttle, but not always. Might want to have some one who knows those carbs have a look.

As was suggested above, make sure your return springs (as in - at least two) are providing enough tension.
