I'm not sure about the stock ratio but I have built two mopar motors with purple shaft cams and never had a problem with the. Summit Racing makes a pretty good cam, as is Edelbrock's Performer camshafts for stock motors.
It will give you a little kick in the butt. Not a painful kick in the butt, more like a love tap to let you know that it is there.

They had probs with the purple 509 cams a few years ago, there is new stock out now. I just did 2 motors and used the 509 in both and they are fine. If you want a good bottom end and mid range then use the purple shaft 2844-484 cam, it has a great lobe and doesnt rob you of manifold vacume for your power brakes like the 509 does. When you change the cam use a bottle of E.O.S. engine oil suppliment from a g.m. dealer. Its got zinc in it so you wont wipe the cam lobes out when you brak the cam in. Or use the equivelent thereof. If you have a high gear like over 3.55`s. then with the 484 cam Id use a set of rhodes variable degree lifters. they pump up as the rpm`s increase so it works well off the line with less lift so no bog then pump up in the mid range giving you more lift and great response. they have a clakety sound to them. if you cvant deal with that then crane has a quit lifter that does the same thing.

i have used purple shafts for years and never had any problems and for the price and quality, you will have an all around thumper and cruizer for what you are looking for just pick the one that suits you to what you want , they usualy have a breakdown on what the uses are for so look into it that way and go from there

Killa,
best cam for youre 440 would be a .484 purple shaft cam. Sounds good, and have the "umph" if you want it. The set up from Mopar Performance comes with lifters and all. http://www.jegs.com/p/Mopar+Performance/746961/10002/-1 It's the first one underneath the "361/383/400/413/426W/440 (Hydraulic)"
