Gas fouled spark plugs
I installed a Mopar performance 440 crate engine in my car.It was a points car but I have installed an electronic ignition. The problem I'm having is that the plugs keep getting fouled with gas and the engine runs rough.Sometimes 2 or 3 cylinders are not firing.I'm running rj12yc champion plugs. There doesn't seem to be enough spark to the plugs to keep them firing.Any suggestions?Hotter plugs?MSD ignition?

sounds like not the right ballast resistor, not enough juice to the coil, not enough juice out of the coil, not large enough wires to the plugs, or that the motor is not properly grounded.

The engine is gounded with a good strap. You could be right about the ballast resistor because it's not the one that came with the distributor(there was none in the kit).I tried different sets of plug wires also but it didn't make any difference.I'll try another ballast resistor and see what happens.Hopefully something will work because it's driving me nuts.Thanks.

Are you using the right coil? From what I read you want a 1.4-1.8 ohm coil for a ballast system, and a .6-.8 ohm coil for aftermarket 12 volt ignition. I may be wrong, so check it out for yourself before you start changing parts. Good luck.

Hi Scott.I tried a few coils on the engine and not much changed.I read that about coils also so I'll check into it because the coil I have and the spare one I have were for a points ignition. It couldn't be that easy though huh?Haha. Thanks for the idea.I'll get another coil today and try it.

I'll have to get the correct ohm ballast resistor, another ECU and a coil for the electronic ignition and try it although there can't be much of a difference between what I have now. It's a real head scratcher.Next step is to try a points distributor and bypass the ECU altogether. Thanks for your ideas guys.

The distributor is new and looks ok as far as the air gap is set.I had the engine running yesterday and it was hitting on all eight with just a small miss in it.I'm going to put some fresh plugs in and another set of new plug wires just to be sure.I'll let you know how it works out and I'll re-check the distributor.

It's up and running.I put a new set of MSD wires and boot protectors and some accel shorty header plugs and it cured the problem. Now I have an oil leak at the rear seal..GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR.Oh well, nothing like crawling around on the garage floor taking the oil pan off.
