rear wheel and tire combo

i've been trying to figure out how wide of tire i can stuff inside the rear of a 66 coronet 500. there isn't a whole bunch of room and tubbing and spring relocation is out of the question. how wide of a tire and how wide of a wheel and what kind of back spacing would i need? any ideas on this from somebody that has done it? thanks

if im not mistaken, with the factory ride height, you dont have much leeway on the outside, either, right? or am i incorrect? are you going with stock rims?

there isn't much room on either side for bigger tires. basically i wanted to know if a 245 tire would fit in there with a wheel with the correct back spacing. the thing with wheels and tires if you buy it and try to mount them you own them and can't return them. i was just thinking it would be much easier for someone who has a coronet who has done this would let me know so i didn't have to figure it all out. i have a ton of stuff to do on this car and it would be just one less thing to think about.

TeeWJay426 has a coronet convertible, and i believe that its a 66...let me see if i cant get ahold of him and see if he can shed some light on this subject!

In the meanwhile, what is the stock size?

wheels and tires

sure...if he's done it to a 67 it would work for my car. i'll either go with a 14 or 15 inch wheel...none of that gangsta stuff. thanks mirada

A 245 tire will fit- I have P245-60R14's on the back of mine, mounted on 14x8 Magnum 500's. Not sure what wheels you plan to use. I don't know the backspacing specs on mine- they were on the car when I got it; could probably find out, since they're pretty much a standard wheel. Hope this helps.

wheels and tires

with the 245 tire does it pretty well fill up the wheelwell with not much room to spare or is there room for an even wider tire? i think the magnum 500 wheels have quite a bit of backspacing to them similar to a plain oem steel wheel. i have 9 inch wide wheels with 4 inch backspacing that i wanted to put on the car but maybe they're too wide with not enough back spacing. thanks.

Not a lot of room to spare.... might be able to get a 255 series on it, but that would probably be it.

tires and wheels

if its that tight maybe a 245 would be ideal. i don't need any tires rubbing in the back. as for wheels i'm going to have to get something with about 5 inches of backspacing i think to make this work.

i would have never thought a coronet could only fit a 245. my volare has 315x60s drag radials on it. i didn't relocate anything.

tires

hey there. if you seen the amount of room available you would know that this vehicle wouldn't take a really wide tire. the wheel arch in the rear is pretty well even with the top of the rim. i could do a mini tub on it but i don't want to get into cutting the car up. if i can get a 245 in there i think i'll be happy.

79mopwer, how does a 315x60 equate to standard measurements? thats like 12.4 wide by almost 30" total diameter, right?
thats a ton of meat there, what are you running for a drivetrain?

Smile tires

don't know what fits on a coronet, but agree a 60 series tire easily fits on a volare- mine has 60's on stock 14 inch magnum 500's, stock springs with no relocation, adjustable rear spring shackle, 8 3/4 rear. hot rod or car craft recently ran an article on fitting different tire and wheel combinations on muscle cars- it was a generic article with info for everyone ( even us- mopars). anyone remember what issue this was? think i might have recycled mine. mopar action has done a couple of articles on bigger tires and wheels- they have an online magazine. have you read any of their project bold beeper installments? i ask because they put some pretty big tires under their roadrunner, which is a b body like your coronet, right? when you find what fits, post it.
