rear end question
I think my 64 valiant has a 9inch ford rear end in it. Does anyone no how to tell or if you have heard of this before what would it have came from. I think it must be about a 3.91 but haven't determind that for sure. Would like to change to a little more of a road gear. Thanks

Id'in Ferd 8, 9, 9+" rear ends
The quick way to tell a Ford 8 from a 9 IF you know it's a Ford, is to look at the bottom bolt below the pinion. An 8", you can access all the lower bolts with a socket/ extension. On 9" rears, there is one bolt which the pinion casting overhangs, and you MUST use a box/ open end wrench.
But the Ferds are MORE complicated by a larger Lincoln rear, which looks a lot like a 9", a 9 3/8, which according to "Kevinstang" is also appearing in some pickup trucks.
But I saw an axle for sale on Craigs the other night and I STILL do not know what it was. It was a 3rd member type, but was not Ford or Chrysler, nor AMC. Might have been 55-57 Chev, or the old Olds or Pontiac axle.

I don't know if they will fit the early A's unmodified, but I have a completely stock Ferd 9" under my 67. It is out of a Lincoln Versaille, built on the Ferd Fairmont/ Merc Monarch platform. For a VERY few years, the Verailles used a 9" with disc brakes, and the spring perches are only about 1/2" wider total than the 67. It IS a tad wider which can be made up with wheel offset.
I would not do this again, that is, the Ferd disc brakes, as parts for them are difficult to come by. I may, if needed, rework it to use Jeep rear disc setup.

Thanks for all the replys I am now sure it is not a mopar rear end. Just got it up on jack stand tonight will get pictures, and more info and try again. I am almost sure it is a ford. Just not sure what it is out of doesn't look to have been cut down.
