Trans help for a newbie
Hello! I am new to this forum as you all may already know. I acquired an old 1953 Dodge M37. The PO was kind enough to replace the old V6 with a 440. I have the truck pretty well took apart and am in the process of getting the engine and trans squared away. I was hoping for a little help Identifying the transmission and with the hook up. I have never been involved with a project of this caliber but feel fairly comfortable doing so with the help of various forums to include this one. So, at this point, I feel the need to make sure my drive train is in order.
The Motor: Block numbers show ( 3698830.440.8 ) and at the top close to the intake manifold ( J440 2 15 E2 ) also has the cross and research indicated it came factory with an .001 undersized crank.. The transmission is an auto and I can not locate any numbers anywhere. There are so many lines coming off this thing I dont know what they all do or were to start. PLEASE HELP! I am going to attempt to post a few pictures and hope there not to big. Thank you for your help in advance!

Welcome!
That sir is a big block bell housing TF727 (Torque Flight). It's the only automatic transmission that came behind the big block Mopar motors. We would also like to see pictures of the rest of the truck (we are picture loving freaks at this forum ).

Welcome. On the passenger side tailshaft may have two raised numbers (year) and 11-12 raised boxes (month) or drivers side pan rail, approx 9 stamped digits then 4 which is the date code, chart needed.
All of the links and lines look familiar except for the one behind the mount, the one in front of the mount should be speedo but it has an odd part hanging down I'm not familiar with.

There were two basic types. The early cable or as they are called push button 727s and the later lever operated 727s. Both will have the rear mounted speedo cable. The other cable I believe is the park cable.

Sorry Can, thanks Don I got that typed in backwards. Here is a Photo.http://www.moparsbymosher.com/specs/...ansmission.htm
If you do have the four digit pan rail number send it along and we'll date it.
The block number shows 72,73 - 78.

YAY!!! Thanks a million guys! I have the one with the shift lever not the push button. Ill do my research as far as all the cables go. I'm reasonably confidant which one is the speedo. I got a long project ahead and you kind folks have already helped a ton. Thanks A miLLION!
Oh yea, and here's a few more pics of the ugly i'm working on for your entertainment .
Here it is all loaded up ready to come home.
Here's one restored.
what i'd love to turn it into!
BUT more realistically, it'll probably end up more like this. But with 440 power! (granted I can work out the oil pan clearances ha! )
Thanks again ya'll

The wheel date code is typically the casting year in the middle and month around the perimeter. Are there any stamped numbers on the drivers side pan rail?
That line (cable) that goes in just below the kick-down lever looks like the push button cable connection. You could have a very wanted trans to a numbers restoring guy if the case is 64 too.

Dana 60 or Dana 70 front axle with closed knuckle, drum brakes and usually a D70 rear. One of the beefiest vehicles ever built that anyone can drive on the street.
Only thing that I would change is the front axle to a later D60, open knuckle and disc brakes.

That's the spot. I have 1444 as June 8 1965. This comes from the 10,000 Day Calendar Chart.
The steel line on the left of the photo is from the pump to the cooler.
Below that is the star wheel (adjuster) for the shifter cable.
Above is the Kickdown Band Adjusting Screw.
The rod is attached to the Throttle Pressure Lever (kickdown)
The wire is for the Neutral Starting Switch. Hope this helps.
