my new old truck

my new old truck
I recently picked up this 37 year old survivor from California and its living the life down here in NZ. I recently had the usual problem with the windscreen wipers failing. Found the problem (the plastic bushes), due to a shortage down this way I've made my own nylon bushes and plan on using E clips to secure the arms. My question is "is there a trick to fitting the arms and clips cause I don't have little hands and the space available aint too big!" Should I disassemble the whole system then try and refit? Your wise help would be appreciated.

If I remember correctly you remove the assembly repair and reassemble.

Your first question, the device on your lower dash appears to be a trailer brake controller, your picture under the hood looks like a cruise control.
please take a picture of what your talking about on the dash.

My truck is older so I can't help with the dash but I had the same thing below my dash for the trailer brake. I didn't trust it at all and don't plan on pulling a big trailer so I removed it. I think my brakes actually worked better when I got rid of it. I returned it all to stock form and it brakes just fine. Good luck with your truck, welcome to the forum. It looks like you have a really clean project to start with.

Yep... Them wiper bushings are a bear to install sometimes... I use a little white grease and a pair of small Chanelle locks to pinch it all together. But your rite. Hard to get the old fat hands in the little area.
Under dash is a trailer brake controller. That can go if your not going to be towing anything.
First under hood is the cruise control actuator.. Should work when cursing down the highway.
Second under hood part, is the Vacuum Amplifer for emission stuff. Like EGR Delay, spark delay, and so on.
As for the Shift indicator.... Not to sure but I think that year has a screw in the shift bowl and then you just unclip it? Not 100% !!!!
Keep us posted.... Nice little old truck....

At one time some brake controllers were run off the brake hydraulics and would have a hard line to the controller.

Sometimes they will leak at the selector shaft also.

Great looking truck, I like to color scheme. I have to work on the wiper arms on my 86 this weekend so I guess I'll feel your pain then. I also have a shift indicator that needs adjustment (shows incorrect gear selection). I'd be interested to see how your repairs turn out.

hey guys thanks for all the previous help, and now on to my next question. I've been trying to research what diff my truck would have as I have to replace axle bearings. Thought I would source the parts before teardown. So its 1981 Dodge Ram Prospector 318v8 torqueflite trans. How many different diffs were fitted to this model and how to identify the diff under the truck? Not too hard for new years day. Happy new year everyone

Ok rear axle bearings replaced, job went like a breeze. No rumble when cornering now. On to the next job, rear leaf spring bushes. Now I havn't measured mine I was looking on line (Rock auto) for parts and they list three different sizes of bush as well as different bolt sizes. Where is the difference, is it between 4wd and 2wd, different motors, deck length? I will obviously have to pull mine apart and measure, but as usual I was hoping to get the parts before stripping the truck. Any help is appreciated.

Hey guys Im trying to find an original steering wheel for my truck one with a working horn. My one has been butchered and had a hole drilled in it for a dare I say it "red neck horn button". I'd love to get an original in working condition. Ive checkd the usual sites but all I can find is after market ones. Any help would be appreciated.
