4.7, 5.2, 5.9 for a Dakota?

I'm considering purchsing a '98-'04 Dakota extended cab 4X4 in the near future. I know the earlier ones came with the ever reliable 5.2. I am looking for information as to what I would need to do if the one I picked out has the 4.7. I'm considering a 360 swap, as I have one in the garage now Is the 4.7 and LA block? Will any of the 360 parts work on a 4.7? I have heard of using magnum heads on a non magnum block. What is involved in that? Just looking at options as it would be embarrassing for my GF to have a bigger motor than me in my truck LOL

The 4.7L will not bolt onto the 5.2L or 5.9L motors. The bellhousing are the same I believe so you could swap them out but that means swapping wiring harness and computer. I owuld look for one with a 5.2L or 5.9L already in it if you want to have the larger motor. If you come across one with a 4.7L though, I wouldn't look away from it. Those 4.7 V8s put out close to what a 5.9L does.

O'RLY? That's good to know So, does this mean the 4.7 isn't an LA engine? What about magnum heads on a 360? I'm just looking at options ATM, and have no firm plans, other than to pick one up

the 4.7 is completely different from other small blocks. it can be made to breathe fire - heads, cams, etc are available. it's a great engine - my dad has one with 155k miles an it and i have 93k on mine with no major issues.

Is there a source for these parts, or is it MP? Just wondering cause it will figure in to my decision to either buy a 318 Dakota, or Try and find a 360. The 4.7 Dakotas are plentiful...so

there are a few different cams available from comp and mopar has the high output cams from the ho jeep 4.7. better intake can be had from mopar also out of the 08+ engines, they just need an adapter (easy to get) to change from computer controlled to cable throttle body. a few companies make tuners and many parts are available from a company called airram.com

been researching it a lot as my dad and i are in the planning stage for his hi-po 4.7

check this out...

Well, what is y'alls opinion on what I should look for? Should I hold out for a 318, or look for a 4.7? I'm thinking I shouldn't pass in a 4.7, but what do y'all think?

I'd go for the 360. Same bolt ons with more power gains and just as reliable as the 318.

If the price is good and it has low mileage, I wouldn't pass up one with a 4.7.

I haven't found a Dakota, non R/T that is, with a 360. That is why I am leaning toward a 318 truck. I'm thinking of swapping in a 360 in place of the 318. That is why I was asking about weather or not magnum stuffs would fit on a 360 =)

A friend of mine had a quad cab Dakota with a Magnum 360 in it stock so I know they made them.

You could get one with a Magnum 318 and swap in a magnum 360 later on.

I have no idea if the Magnum 5.9L are like the LA 5.9L of being externally balanced. If you do go this way, make sure that you get the computer from whatever vehicle the motor comes out of.

Depending on milage, this would be the time to get a new torque convertor installed and flush the tranny.

I have a 360 R/T and love it. Plenty of power. I added the K&N filter charger and that made a big differance. The mopar performance computer seemed to do little other than requiring Prem. Fuel.

Dude, where in the PNW are you located? I think i know where you found that drivetrain.... as far as the 5.2/5.9 trans bolting to a 4.7/5.7 and vice versa cannot be done. they are totally different bellhousing bolt patterns.

I live up in Everett, but the drivetrain is down south, not far from the parents place. I'll go for a visit, and come home with a new truck LOL!

So, I brought home the motor, trans and rear end yesterday. About to go unload it and take some pix I got the two computers along with all the connectors for each sensor/controller/whathaveyou, that was removed from the R/T wire harness with about a 3-4" pigtail. Now, the research begins. Gonna need headers, the Hughes airgap MPI intake, and an engine kit for the 5.9, since I don't know the history of the moror personally. I want to put it in knowing it will run. The 5.2 I pull, will mate up to the tranny, and I'm seriously considering massaging that into my Demon The 9.25 will get the mount relocated and swapped into the Dakota
