440 question
Actually they came w/ a metal gear that had a white nylon coating on the teeth. But only the timing gear, not on the crank, it was standard metal. It helped with wear over time. Ive downed several 440s over the years , most of the newer yeasr had them 72 and up.to 78.

i thought they put the nylon over the aluminum to keep the noise down. and so you can replace it with a real one in30.000 miles
LOL, Ive pulled motors apart w/ over 100k on them and the nylon was like new. chain was stretched bti otherwise very nice shape. they may have done it for noise, But Ive never noticed a diff. when i put a double roller in the ones Ive built sounding any different then before i built them. Ive had them too, as soon as i take the cover off, chunks of it were built up at the bottom.6 one way half dozen the other.
The nylon cam gear was intalled to keep noise down...total junk. The nylon goes shortly after 110k miles and then you jump the chain and the vehicle dies on the spot. Been there, done that! They are not durable. The nylon is part of the gear and junk. Motor home I read somewhere may have been double roller metal gear. 440hp and 400hp motors had double rollers factory. Same markings as made by SA gear-even 30 yrs later.ie same part number on the sprocket I noticed. I still have a set from a 400 4bbl. Pull the cover and spring for a new double roller...I have had great success with the Edlebrock doulbe roller...Most come from just a couple diff sources anyway. Evan a Mancini or Summits brand best double roller I think is made by SA gear. Get one with .250 rolling chain links. Even Jegs 45.00 chain is decent...You buy the Mopar brand chain (not a true roller) or Milodon or Comp cams chain and you are just getting a repackage anyway.
