Cool 68 Roadrunner starting problem

I have been driving my bird for 10 years with flawless performance. In the past 6 months each time I would go to start the car it would act like a bad battery connection, you know, chatter chatter click click, or it would start just fine. No continuity on whether it was going to start or not. Then I noticed it started easier when the engine was cold, and hard starting when it was warmed up, then after a while it didn't matter when I tried, it just was not consistent whether it was going to start or not. Soooo, here's what I found so far. If I turn on the key and short the starter relay posts it fires every time. I have replaced the battery, cables, relay, starter, put the new electronic ignition system on it that I was planning to do anyway, ballast resistor and ignition cylinder. Now it looks like it could actually be the exciter wire that triggers the starter relay. I am curious if anyone has ever had this happen, and what they did to fix it. I am about to pull the wiring block out of the firewall under the dash and start tracing to see if there is a voltage drop somewhere through a badly insulated wire....any thoughts??? Many thanks, Dan
