Brake light question

Sounds like a bad turn signal switch. The brake lights go thru the switch and are passed back and forth when you turn your turn signals on. When they are not on, there is a connection that only turns on the brake lights. Just plug in your front turn signals, and see if they work too. If they do, it could STILL be the switch because of how the wiring is set, but if they don't, then you pretty well know you have a problem in that area, and wires to chase to be sure it's the switch and not the wiring to the switch or after.

Most likely... From here, what I'd do is put something between the brake light switch and the activator so they would stay on, and then use a test light. Probe to the leads into the turn signal switch to make sure the power goes into your steering column. If it does, then probe the leads coming out of the column and going to the rear. If they have power, then it's somewhere between there and the back. If they dont have power, it's the switch. What I should have said to begin with is you're most likely right, that pretty well limits it to the turn signal switch.
