finally talked my uncle out of the ol bee

Well after being glued to this forum for two weeks I figured I might as well join. I recently talked my uncle out of his 70 superbee and man ... This car just gives me a big warm fuzzy. It was rebuilt in the 90s and has just sat outside for the past 9 years and hasn't moved. So when I bought it I drained all the fluids and it runs now but I'm having carburetor issues. It spits and sputters and back fires through the carb and exhaust when I give it throttle but still idles fine. I was going to post this in the new members section but thought that I had too many questions. So I put it here instead. It has the origional 383 in it btw. I also posted pics in my album. But anyway here are my issues. I'm a fairly fart smelled...uhh I mean smart feller but I'm an aircraft tech not an auto mechanic so here's my issues
The engine was completely rebuilt by my uncle's friend however I have no idea as to what's in it. It has an mild cam with no lope and seems to be fairly original. But is there a way to find out without tearing it apart?
Ok issue number two. ... It has an edlebrock 600 on it that is barely working with a stock manifold. I also have a road demon 625 dp in the garage ... Would this be a beter carb or should I rebuild the 600...or should I just get a new 650 or 750? I would like to get a new intake manifold as well. So what are your thiughts?
Lastly the only thing I want to do other than carb and intake is short headers... So how would I go about matching all this up when I don't know cam size or what's been done to the heads? Any help would be greatly appreciated!!!!

I would rebuild the 600 and go completely thru the complete fuel system

Welcome. If it's an auto rebuild or buy 650 Vacuum Secondary, 4 speed for sure the D.P.

You could try a dial indicator on the valve to see what lift it has (not an accurate method) and if its not much then likely stock.

As far as matching parts for auto beginners copying someone's build will give expected results. If you are a real Fart Smeller here are some calculators to fool with.

:welcome2: I think the 600cfm is to small for a big block motor...should be at least a 650-750...On my 70 Super bee 383 It had an 850 DP Holley and loved it....Bill

cool yea i apprechiate the input.... im heading to summit racing tommorow to get some parts that i ummm "need" but so far i think im going to go with the 650 and a dual plane edelbrock performer intake. i also want to get headers but im not sure about the clearance with power steering. so i guess ill have to see. but i think that some airflow and a working carb should open her up a bit.

Hey that's awesome..I have a 68 Coronet that I have been working on and I did go with a 750 Holley carb for the 440 and she is a screamer when she is not leaking oil..That's what I have been working on now.

Take it out for a good spin and come back and give it a spark plug check.
Pull one of the plugs and see what color it is? That will give you a good indication where you might want to go with the jetting.
It is easier with new plugs for reading. But if your plugs are still in good shape. Look at one so you can tell the differences...
Or post up a picture, We will be glad to shoot you some feed back..
