issue with engine running
i have a 73 satellite i just put a 360 in and i am having trouble getting it to start. i know i have fire, i know i have fuel and i know the timing is close because it started once but will not start again. i am out of ideas and loosing patience at this point. does anyone have any thoughts or knoledge that could possibly help.

yes it cranks, has spark, has fuel. tried to check compression, but that doesn't explain why it started for me the first time and then never wanted to again. went through rebuild of this engine all except rebuild pistons and heads everything else brand new or rebuilt. running out of options hooked compression device said i was running 30 psi cylinders 1,3 the only two i checked

what are you running for ground straps ie:battery to block, block to frame. Was your timing set correct before install, are you only getting 30 psi a hole ? Thats seems very weak to me. Can you manually rotate the engine to TDC on #1 cylinder ?

it's not 180 off, we have timing, it ran for a good 15 minutes so we could time it. turned off and then nothing wouldn't start up, firing and firing spark tried turning distributor around to get it to start again nothing. brand new cables from block to battery, to ground and to the relay on the firewall. no i'm not understanding it fire up the first time i try but nothing for 2 hours more of trying.

clean your plugs too, I had a guys motor not fire after it ran for the 20 min. break in, then did the same thing. the float stuck and washed the cyl. down and fouled the plugs to the point they wouldnt fire. I put a new set in and bang. The comp. is way low too. it should be at least 120 psi a hole.Did you put new rings on the used pistons?

I would check the compression of all 8 cylinders. If you only have 30 PSI of compression on cylinders 1 and 3, that is too low for a motor like that to run. i'd be willing to be its a valvetrain problem. did you hear any funny sounds before you turned it off?

went out there and pulled valve covers, unhooked spark plug to check compression and tried to turn it over. it wanted to start so i plugged the spark plug back up and it fired right up. let it run for alittle bit and turned it off. let it sit for like 10-15 minutes and went to fire it back up and it started again. weird yes it is, cause it still only had about 30 psi
