REAR END SWAP QUESTION?

I HAVE A 72 CHARGER WITH A 318 AND 727 AND P245/60R14 TIRES.
IM NOT SURE WHAT REAR END I HAVE, IM GOING TO HAVE TO LOOK.
ID LIKE TO GET MORE POWER BY CHANGING REAR ENDS AND WAS WANTING TO KNOW WHAT REAR END I NEED AND OUT OF WHAT VEHICLE.
AND IS THERE A NEWER ONE WITH DISC BRAKES TO LOOK FOR?
THANKS FOR ANY INFO

You should have a 8 3/4. It will have a pumpkin instead of a rear cover.

I have the same rear end (8 3/4) in my 69 Charger and its a decent rear end. I put 3.91/489 case w/ sure grip in mine and it works perfect. You can get a Disc Brake conversion kit and put them on instead of the drum brakes.

That is not an 8 3/4 it has a rear cover. It most likely a 7 1/4. I'd get a 8 3/4 if you gonna do any HP mods.

I have a complete 8 3/4. I'm in So California. I don't suppose you local here. If not Most any mid 60s to early 70s B body. If there is no cover on the back thats what your looking for.

That's not an 7 1/4, it's an 8 1/4. Those are "not bad" for a 318, but if you ever upgrade the drivetrain, it won't be very heavy. Also, they use "clip" retained rear axles.

I'd look for an 8 3/4.

the 71 and on chargers and other B-bodies have rear end that are wider than the earlier B-body rears (62 - 70). The rear end you should look for is one out of a Challenger (or 70-74 Barracuda) believe it or not. [70 to 74]. it is the similar width as your charger. slight mods to the perches will be necessary. although your 8 1/4 will be just strong enough for your 318.

the 318 is getting replaced in the fall for a 360. id rather give up the great gas mileage for more low end power. i could iust swap gears but thought it would be better to swap it for a better rear end with lower gears.
thanks for the info.
