Those people should be slapped, kicked, and locked in the closet under the stairs. (I'm a huge fan of the 383 big block motors)

The 383 big block is a great motor with a good amount of cylinder wall material and can be built up quiet nicely. I built one a few years back that was making just under 600 HP and globs of torque.

I would buy it as long as it is in good running order. If it needs to be freshened up, thats no big deal. A mild cam, 750 carb, Performer/Performer RPM intake, 1 3/4" tube headers, and a good ignition setup will get you a good amount of power, and that is before any cylinder head work.

383

Engine Masters either May or June issue has a great article on the 383. It's compression and stroke are superior to engines like the 396. You can create serious power with a few bolt ons and it is reliable power plant. Check it out. I think you'll change your mind.

Check out Muscle motors and 440 source for stroker kits for the 383. Also watch the clip on Mopar Action 's website regarding the 383/496stroker build they are giving away. I think the result was 538 hp and 618ftlb torque.

well, the 396 chevy is a very powerful motor
think of it as
396>383
440>396

Thank You

A 650 carb is a little ont he small side with those other parts. I'd go with a 750 that way there, if you deside to upgrade the cam to a larger one or add more stuff to it, you don'thave to buy another carb.

With what you have planned, you should come very close to 400 Hp if not more.

383 build engine masters

I can not find the link on-line, but if you send me your address I'll photo-copy it and send it to you. Try www.enginemasters.com . I can't find the link but maybe you can.

A Stroker kit is an aftermarket assembly that increases the displacement of a reciprocating engine by increasing the travel of the piston (that is, the piston moves further up and/or down in the cylinder). This is done by using a different crankshaft where the crank pin is moved further away from the center of the axis of rotation of the crankshaft. While this increases displacement and torque it can potentially lower the limit to which the motor can rev safely compared to the stock configuration.
