Carburetor Question
1969 Fury III 318 Auto:
Replaced the original Carter BBD 2-bbl with a nice rebuilt identical carb; starts fine but does anyone know the proper adjustment specs for the fuel/air mixture screws? I backed both out from seated to 2 1/2 turns & the exhaust stinks of raw gasoline. Forgive my ignorance on Carter carbs, is the fuel adjustment on the passenger side or driver side? Info on these little Carter's have been impossible to locate. Thanks for any insight as always.

First make sure the timing is set first. If you are running points, the order is:
1 point gap, dwell
2 timing
3 idle speed/ mixture/ idle speed/ mixture as needed
4 After idle mixture is proper, then touch up idle speed if necessary
Either get a tach or vacuum gauge or both. Warm the car completely up, and be sure the choke is fully open. Adjust the screws first one, then other, repeat, wrench, repeat, for max idle speed or highest vacuum, then screw IN (cw) until idle speed just "starts to not drop." In other words, the "lean" side of the peak.
You'll have to adjust the idle speed, if they are off very far.

Good point. With the engine warm and idling, on a LEVEL parking place, remove the air cleaner and look AND LISTEN in the carb throat. If you hear an erratic sound almost like bacon grease spitting, and/ or can look and see droplets of fuel dropping into the throat, the float is too high, the needle / seat is leaking, the float is defective, or the fuel pump pressure is way too high
