How do I replace speedo cable housing
Hi, I could really use some help with this.
So a while back, my speedometer cable broke. When I went to replace it, it came off fine, and I found where the cable had broken, confirming the cable was in fact the problem. But when I tried putting the new cable on, it wouldn't thread on right to the housing on the transmission. I noticed the threads on the cable housing looked to be in bad shape. I need to remove the cable housing to try and fix the threads, or replace the housing altogether. When I went to remove it, trans fluid gushed out, so I quickly put it back in. So my question is, am I going to have to drain out all the fluid in the transmission to remove the housing? I'd really rather not, since the fluid is nearly new.

727 tranny?
Assuming this is so, you should be able to find what you need at any decent parts store (they may have to order it actually). I think places like Summit Racing and Jeggs might even carry them.
Having fluid come out is normal. You'll want to chock the front tires and lift the back end up or pick up the driver's side as high as you feel comfortable with. Have an oil pan under it when you pull it out. once the fluid seems to stop, clean up the area and install the new unit. Once the car is level, add some new tranny fluid in, start it up, let the tranny get warm and then add some more if needed.

yes, it's a 727. I got the housing taken out. About a qt. of fluid drained out so i put a fresh qt. in. The only place i could even find a replacement pinion gear housing was on ebay, but we managed to get the threads on the old housing filed enough to hold the cable on, so it all worked out ok. thanks
