Unhappy Plymouth Fury III Comando

I am new to the forum, I am working in a small Gas station / Automotive service station in Portland Oregon, I was given a 1967 Plymouth Fury III comando 2 door in pretty good shape, the engine needs a tune up, but runs ok for now, however, the tranny seems to need repair(s), in drive, it sits there unmoving until reved hard, then it creeps, and seems not to shift, it has reverse too.
It has a 383 engine and a 727 tranny, any advice ?

Talking

That was the first thing I checked, it was not low, and it has not leaked.

By no means am I suggesting you dont know what you're doing but I have seen people that dont know how to properly check a 727 fluid level.
If you check it in park you will get an incorrect reading on the stick as the torque converter doesnt fill when the tranny is in park. You must check it warm and in neutral. Also like Bob said check the fluid colour and smell and feel.
We'll get ya sorted out Doc. Keep us posted.

It was a good question, sometimes one forgets to check the simple things first like fluid levels and wire connections.
The tranny fluid is not burnt, but perhaps the filter is gummed up after so many years and who knows how many tins of tranny additives and other residues built up over time.

Ok, cool. Had to ask.
My advice would be give her a tune up and we will go from there.

Also "Fundamentals of Automatic Transmissions and Transaxles" from Chrysler and it is easy to comprehend and very thorough. It is available from the Chrysler Training Center. The number on it is TM-508A and the cost is about $10-$12. You won't find a better manual covering 904s, 727s or the new transaxles. You may want to check that out.

There is another hope. I have the Torqueflite a-727 transmission handbook by Carl H. Munroe, it's what i used to rebuild my 727. I stand behind it. You can order it on Amazon. HPBooks-1399, that's whats on the bottom of the spine.

Easy enough, it may actually shape up with only a filter / fluid change and band adjustment, actually this car may only have less than 29,000 original miles on it, it had one original owner here in Oregon, was dealer serviced for years and sat unused for who knows how many years.........the guy died as he was pretty old when he bought it, it is not a "pretty car" the green paint is dull and horrible to look at, so no one gives it a second glance.....

What is the diff between Dexron II and III ? as it relates to the 1967 727 ?
Is type F better ?

Tom Hand says type F sometimes gives firmer shifts....

I put Type F in my rebuilt 727 with no issues at all. From what I've read online, Type F gives a little firmer shifts.

I heard putting in a separate tranny fluid cooler was a good idea, so if a leak develops, antifreeze will not get into the tranny, does anyone know of a good model external cooler to use ?

I used Dextron 3... Thats what my transmission builder (Pat Blais) recommends. No problems with shifting at all...

I just got a 65 fury II with 24k and have the same problem

I just picked up a 65 fury II 383 commando 2bl with 24k original miles, hadnt been tabbed scince 74, been in a dark garage so is in mint condition.

Got the car running and drives in reverse, but no forward, I had driven it like 6 locks with it badly slipping/not grabbing or hooking up, but it hooks up fine in reverse, so not torque converter.

just changed the fluid and filter including draining the torque converter and still no change.

before I yard this thing out, should I have it flushed, or just puull her out and have her rebuilt, it doesnt go in 1st or 2nd either.

adjusted the forward band and it was right where it needed to be.

that's a damn nice dart, blue 68! DAMN nice!

type f is for ford vehicles, and i have been told never to use it in chrysler applications, but i cannot honestly say why. i'd never heard the 'firmer shifts' bit.

Type F will definitely give firmer shifts but it has a grittier texture that will wear out the clutches and bands sooner. BEEN THERE, DONE THAT 30 YEARS AGO!!!
