Tuning my Plymouth Fury!

Hi Everybody!

I want to open this thread because my V8 360 from my plymouth fury is going to have a reconstruction of their cylinder heads so I want to take to carry out some modifications in the engine and other parts to get a better MPG and why not a little more power!

The average current MPG of my car is between 10 and 11 MPG in town and I'll be very happy if i can increase this number to 13 or 13.5 MPG in town. My car is all stock (the rust is stock too ).

Here's some modifications that I readed in some place that could help to increase the MPG:

-Replace my old carb Holley 2245 to this: http://www.summitracing.com/parts/hl...57sa/overview/

-With this intake manifold: http://www.summitracing.com/parts/ed.../make/plymouth

-Replace the old spark plug wires and ignition coil with this:
http://www.summitracing.com/parts/ac.../make/plymouth
http://www.summitracing.com/parts/msd-8200/overview/

-Replace the mechanical fan with this: http://www.summitracing.com/parts/mi.../make/plymouth

-Replace the stock exhaust system with 2.5 inch dual exhaust system with X pipe using this babys: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Flowmaster-S...c19ed7&vxp=mtr

-A guy recommend me to change my transmission for a transmission with overdrive but I don't know if my torqueflite 727 already has it. If this trans doesn't has it what transmission can I use?

I readed in some forums that I must use a torque converter lock up but I've been looking for a lockup kit for torqueflite 727 trans but I don't find anything

-How can be possible to raise up a bit the engine compression ratio? I think this will make the 360 more efficient

Here's some doubts:
-What rear end gear should I use? I don't know what rear gear end my car actually has

-A guy recommend me to use headers, is this true?

-I readed in some Europeans forums that I must remove the catalyst system, is this true? how can I do this?

-Could be possible to swap my 727 Torqueflite transmission to a modern 4speed or 5 speed transmission (end of 90s) from a Dodge Ram 4x2 or Jeep Grand cherokee 4x2 ? What Transmission module can be compatible?

Your 727 isn’t overdrive, but you can swap in a 904 that has it. I’d find out what gears you are running so you know where to go from there. jack the car up and spin the wheel slowly, counting the revolutions of the drive shaft to get your ratio ballpark.

Headers can help but don’t go too big on the tubing.

Carbs with smaller primaries will get much better mileage, too, so look into that.

I completely removed the clutch fan in my fury and replaced it with a great big electric. Both power and mileage increased.

Make sure it’s tuned up real nice, too, as that makes a huge difference. Running low pressure in your tires can also hurt mileage.

There are a bunch of tricks to get decent mileage. Keep your foot out of it, too.

Here's a carb IF you are planning to go to a 4bbl ONLY the #9636 model Made specifically for Mopar Works great on a small Block I have used one on a 360

FIRST find out what rear gears it has ? 2.91 would be good for mileage.
late 70's 727 was available with a lockup converter slight help. It's part of the trans NOT a kit
You could also add a Gear Vendors Overdrive to you existing trans to have overdrive.
A518 overdrive trans will help mileage on Highway but is expensive...
2 1/2 dual exhaust, no headers Set the timing about 8-10 degrees BTDC
Manifold http://www.ebay.com/itm/SB-DODGE-MOP...5f322a&vxp=mtr

Hi Everyone

Thank you for all the help. I have some doubts about the Skwerly's reply:

I'll calculate my ratio ballpark but what could be a good rear end gear for my car?

What about TCI Torqueflite A 904? http://www.summitracing.com/parts/tc.../make/plymouth Can this be a good option for my trans replacement?

And about the converter Lock up, can I use this with a non computed auto trans ?

Headers can help but don’t go too big on the tubing.
what would happen if I exceed on the tubing size? I this the 2.5" is a good size for the exhaust system.

if I'm right this is a carburetor with mechanical secondaries, I readed a time ago that this carburetors are used mainly for track or 1/4 mile purposes due to the high performance and poor MPG that this type of carburetor provides

You could also add a Gear Vendors Overdrive to you existing trans to have overdrive.
I never readed some like this, can you explain how can I add the OD to a torqueflite 727?

My priority is get a better mpg in town driving but could be amazing If I get a better mpg on highway too. On city I don't drive fast, maximum at 50mph

Sorry for the double post but today my mechanic tell me that is necessary to rebuild the 360 from my car not only the cylinder heads so I think this is a good time to make some modifications on the engine to improve more MPG. In other threads I readed that a camshaft change is good for MPG.

What the more experienced users think about it?
