Same story. Depends on what you want to do with the car.
For car shows (wow factor) and 1/4 mile runs (no replacement for displacement), the 440 is the way to go. For general driving and street/strip fun, the 440 is a lot heavier than the 340 and that takes a toll in handling, and most of the time just isn't necessary, especially since the 340 can be quite a potent power plant.

Can't help on the street version but on the track... A strong built naturally aspirated 340 bored and stroked to 410" with the proper heads and cam will run as fast as the same built 440.... Weight is the difference... My 340 Duster has ran as quick and fast as my Barracuda with the BB.... But the choice is yours.... As we hear a lot in racing... " How fast can you afford to go??" How much WOW do you want and can afford???? Up to you...

Well, here's my .02 worth: Since you have two '71s (must be nice!) I would stay with the 340, I have a '73 that I pulled the 318 and dropped in a 440,what a P.I.T.A. I wished I'd stayed with the small block! Yes, the car is fast, but once in awhile a small block will kick my butt at the track. the 440 with stock heads is way heavy, and even though running a 295/55 drag radial with a locker rear end, battery in the trunk,I still spin coming off the line.
