Camshaft Identification
Camshaft Identification
Can you help me identify a camshaft? I had bought it on ebay for my 1956 270 ploy motor. When it arrived, it was clear it was not the right one. I hate to throw it away. On the rear end of the cam it stamped 427092. Other markings are: SPD 8-62 behind the first cam journal. Between the last lobe and the gear for the distributor, there is a 24 and B21. Finally between the gear and the last journal, there is a C2. The second and fourth cam journals are drilled. Any help would be great
The SPD is a Melling camshaft
8-62 Should be the cam number??????
I do not see the listing.... Maybe e-mail Melling or call Jegs tech and see if they can look it up for you?
Good Luck... I know you have been looking for this for awhile now.... Thanks for bring it back up... Im sure someone knows or has the listing.... Cheers

A good core like that can be re-ground into a performance cam. I believe it’s Oregon cam grinders that do that work. Infact you might want to measure the lift of your cam compared with stock or the cam spec for that cam as it could have been re-ground already.

I would agree Iowan.... Oregon cam grinders, Egge Machine, or Powell Machine Company, They all do old Engine cam stuff for folks.... I'll do a little more poking around, I'll have to out and dig around in the shop and see if i might have a old catalog that may have the number in it...
This is a cam for sale through Kanter. Looks exactly like it. Snout in front. Oiling holes on 2nd and 4th journals, etc. For the 277 and 301 poly and early 318 engines up to 66, but not the 270 poly I have.

Mystery solved. I located the box, and it had a part number CM-198, which is Kanter's part number for the 277, 301, 318 "A" series motor from 55-66. I still don't know who the manufacturer is, but at least I know what it is for and it is a stock grind. Thank you
