99 1500 Tranny and Motor?

Guys needing some help on a 99 1500? A buddy of mine was reading up on these trannys and motors. He has a 97 with a bad tranny, and the 99 has a good tranny and a bad motor. He was reading up on the motor and it was saying something about the block number or the vin number had to be a certain one? like vin 5 or vin Z or something like that. He is wanting to take the motor out of the 97 and put in the 99 will this work are they compatable??

I think the 5th one was a y or z, denoting 5.2, or 5.9 motor. But the blocks are the same for the trans

Thanks guys..I told him in my oppinion it should work cuz they are both 360's but he said that when you look at buying a motor the years run from 94 to 97 and 98 to 01 so that is why he was asking and was confused. I dont a little research of my own and as far as i could tell everything should work.
