Dodge ram block

LA blocks/heads and Magnum blocks/heads are a little different.
If you go with an Edelbrock or Mopar Performance MPFI intake, then it can be done. But you cannot mount the Magnum "dome" style intake to a set of LA cylinder heads due to the angle of the mounting bolts.
PK1 I believe knows how the swap needs to go.

There is no difference between the magnum 360 heads and magnum318 heads. They are one in the same.
You can not use the 340 intake with the magnum heads. Magnum heads a vertical mounting thread boss for the intake. The 340 is slanted. Could you fill the 340 bolts holes and redrill? Sure, but Ive never lined up the runners so your on your own there.
La Heads on magnum block? Magnum heads are significantly better for flow and lighter valves with better oiling. LA intake ports are slightly taller but not much. Will work.
But yes you can, to answer your question. You need to change oiling system though. When you price out the re oiling, new rocker gear, studs, etc..and new custom oil thru pushrods you could get a set of new EQ castings and swap your old gear from the 97. They'll support 450hp.

We put a 87 carb engine into a 92 EFI computer controlled truck. I tried to keep all the wiring as is but it ended up wired old school mopar carbed wiring. Completely removed the auto shutdown relay and kept mostly temp and oil sensors so they would register at the dash gauges. Wired in neutral safety and a new reverse light circuit. A bit of a pain and you'll need a good full wiring diagram with good electrical knowledge but it can be done with lots of patience.

It probably would be easier than what I started to try, knowing that is the plan from the start. I would not do a wholesale chop and cut though, strip all the covering and use a good diagram to save as many circuits as possible. The reverse light circuit was the only one I had to go into the fuse box and add, but I did try and keep all the dash gauges as is. The 92 was confusing at times because some of the column and other wiring came through the firewall to the large plug connectors turned around and went back in. Had a couple of WTF days, but once I sorted through it, it then made sence and was glad I didn't cut too much out at the start.

Dont know about the compression but I got more throttle response going from a 2 brl carb to a 4 barrel carb. The exhaust flows better too. 318 heads are higher velocity and 340/360 heads are higher flow. I just used parts I had laying around cus I had no money to buy eldelbrock stuff.

I would stay with the FI engine btw. They have better economy and are more efficient. You make more power for same gas. Just work the exhaust, port and polish intake and heads, put a bigger throttle body on it, hotter plugs and you will have alot of power after a tune. Way more then you would get carberated and you still get better mpg.

Why do you want to replace the 318 Magnum block with a 360 LA block? the 318 is internally balanced while the 360 is externaly balanced so you will have to get a different TC for the auto (if you keep it).
Why not replace the Magnum 318 with a Magnum 360, replace the PCM and swap on this - http://www.summitracing.com/parts/DCC-5007852/
If you really want a 360 LA motor, why not spend some money on the heads and get this to keep the EFI - http://www.summitracing.com/parts/EDL-28155/
(These are just ideas)

Your FI 318 with mag heads will make more power than a stock 360 LA.
As suggested above, the M1 intake and a tune with headers will really wake it up. Easily over 50 HP with stock cam. You currently have no power over 4400 rpm due to the intake and tune.
The 318 magnum has more lift on the cam than the 360 and she was detuned from the factory for durability and detonation which was proven to not be necessary. There is alot left in the tune as is.
The nice thing about using the M1, Headers and the tuner is that they all swap over to the 360. So if the 318 gets tired you could stroke it to 390 ( as stated above, already internally balanced set up ) or swap a boneyard 360 and reuse all your already acquired parts.

Is your truck 4wd or 2wd? Do you want an automatic or manual?
Automatic - I would go with a well built 47RH. They were found in the 3/4-1 tons
Manual - NV4500 is the only one I would go with. Its a very strong 5spd. There are two different versions; one has a 6.34:1 1st gear ratio and the second has a 5.61:1 1st gear. For a street vehicle, I would go with the second one as it is usually cheaper the first one I decribed as people in the four wheeling community love the higher rear ratio.
