Backround - 1997 Dodge Ram 2500 Extracab short box 4x4 automatic transmission factory tow package.

Problem - It started with the cruise control disengaging on its own going down the road. When this happened the truck would hesitate and backfire. This happened several times on my way home. I tried running in 3rd gear, when this happened the override would reset and I would have 4th again. Days later I went to run the truck, it started as normal then would die after 10 seconds, and then it won't restart. In the no start condition I have no spark. Finally had it towed to the shop. 4 hrs of chasing wires the tech says its the computer. Got 2 computers from a junkyard and nothing still won't start. Check engine light does NOT light when you turn the key on. The tech told me that he has pulled the schematic, put a load to all the grounds, checked all the wires for continuity, checked that the PCM had power in when it should... and now he has no clue.

Has anyone ever seen this before, if so please let me know where to look. This repair is going to cost me more than the damn truck is worth soon.

my 98 2500 did almost the same thing although i would see the tach drop to zero right away during the hesitation. it was the pick up coil.
